I think with Ray, Ben vacilltates between "lecture mode" and casual mode. When he's telling an Inuit story or explaining how echoes can be deceiving, he can be a bit formal. But when they're having dinner or hanging out in the car (as is their wont) then he may hang on to a bit of his formality, but his ease is written plainly on his face. He'll smile a little more readily, his body language will relax, his eyes will widen and brighten and he turns into this very warm and engaging man. It's the most amazing sight! You can see it also when he's trying to explain to Ray that he's not a saint in "RWOB". He's very animated at that moment even though they're ducking bullets from the Bolt brothers :)
Ah, sorry. I didn't mean to undermine the intimacy between Benny and Ray, in any sense. That part at the bottom is still not well thought through, and I meant that as, *on the given assumption that* the relationship with Ray is the most tightly-knit and profound one Fraser has ever had at this point. *Even so* there's a distinction that I sometimes see, which says things about Fraser's cultural mind structure rather than about his level of intimacy with Ray. For instance, there are some things he just doesn't do with Ray (at least onscreen), like take a superior attitude with no hedging at all, or outright condemn him... again, it's a matter of the level of hedging.
I haven't seen S3 yet, so I don't know if it'll be any different with Kowalski -- though I doubt it. This thing I'm saying is more cultural, or subcultural, than just a matter of personality or situation. Although, yeah it could be different, and you know, that wouldn't necessarily mean that Fraser is any less intimate with RayV -- we dsfen_japan folks had a discussion

Oh no no! I didn't think that you had undermined their intimacy. I was agreeing with you :) I was just saying that with Ray he can be very polite and then very casual. But, like you'd said, he's casual with his father and with Dief all the time. :)

I went to that LJ, but all I'd gotten were little boxes where the characters should be. Even if I'd seen the characters, I wouldn't have been able to read them! :)
Sizzling lovers?? *laughing* That's the best line I've seen yet!
D'oh. Sorry, I didn't say, but that community is in Japanese. This conversation took place somewhere in Japanese. I can't seem to find it now, and my memory isn't reliable... Maybe sizzling was a bit too strong a translation^^;
