Lovely work, Zerda! I wanted to gush more about your Castiel portrait... it has a wonderful sense of movement and harmony. The background has a lovely, graceful flow to it. Its colors, and the softness of the strokes pull everything together. Just fantastic. <3
I didn't want to ask a bunch of questions about your process on my lj, so I was wondering... how do you do your painting in SAI, if you don't mind my asking? I'd love to hear more about your work for the dcbb. <3
Thanks again! Movement is something I struggle a lot with, especially with digital art. I'm glad this one turned out well :)
At first, all the background was in the same tones/values/saturation as the rock Cas is sitting on, and I had problems with making him stand out but my beta did a wonderful job and following her advice,(on the parts that are in the "background of the background") I decreased the saturation, added noise and shifted the colours just a little bit toward the blues and it worked!
It depends, really, but lately, I think I'm settling into a pattern that seems to work:
for the drawings with lines:-(more or less) rough sketch with the marker tool
( ... )
Ahhhhh I love process photos! That's badass. I can tell that you're pretty disciplined if you can keep up that kind of layer-by-layer addition to the image. I have much respect for that.
(My process pictures would look something like:
*do some awful sketches *do equally awful line-overs in an alarming shade of red *scribble out the lines that look awful *keep scribbling *white is my best friend *why don't you just do lineart? *quiet brain no time for your guff *start painting background *but you haven't even finished your figures yet *lots of awful color splotches *less awful color splotches *eventually after many paint-overs, things look like stuff *texture, texture, texture *congratulations, a picture!)
Gotta love your beta, because she steered you right. Your Castiel portrait is in my favorite DCBB piece so far. There's been some pretty awesome pieces so far, but yours just speaks to me the most.
Mmmh, the more I draw digitally, the more I get used to it let's say (I did quite a lot of 'sketch --> add lines with unforgiving black pen' traditionally and watercolour work so maybe it helped with the discipline?) Though I do love the freedom of painting on one layer still.
I am no stranger to the awful line-overs in an alarming shade of red hehe (use them when I can't figure out anatomy)... Aannd ... a LOT of my sketches are awful. Seriously you should see the one I did for this portrait >_> I always admire people who can work texture into their drawings beautifully (you do), it's something that I would like to improve on, one day.
Gosh, I love process pictures! Maybe one day, you could do one! (that you usually drew the lines in the end really intrigues me)
*trips over feet and falls on the floor* I AM DEAD YOU KILLED ME. Seriously though, I'm just amazed you think so ^///^ You're actually my favourite so far too! ^_^
