So I find myself suddenly traveling to Nashville for a conference next week. Anybody know any good places to visit if I have downtime? I've only really ever driven through on my way somewhere else, taking time to visit the Parthenon and not much besides. I shall be there on weekdays ( Read more... )

When you get to that point, I hope you will read my end of BSG post, because I didn't think it ended nearly as badly as everyone else said. It wasn't perfect, but.... (and I'll say no more) ;-)

For history, the best place in Nashville is Fort Negley, an AMAZING Civil War era stone fortress on top of a hill. Great views of the city and some amazing architecture. I was seriously wowed by it.

Also, depending on how long you have and if you have a rental car, Rippavilla Plantation down in Franklin is also great. Skip Carnton, the more famous one, and visit Rippavilla, because the staff is more friendly, it's less expensive, and it's just as beautiful, if not more so, than Carnton.

Another Civil War site in Franklin is the Carter House, which was a pivotal location in the Battle of Franklin. But of course Franklin is some distance from Nashville.

Definitely my #1 recommendation is Fort Negley.
