I get a lot of bindweed in the summer here. It's prolific and hard to completely eradicate (I won't use herbicides and its taproot is under an enormous juniper that can't really be broached), but it's not actually that tenacious and pretty easy to pull. I grab hold of it and pull and pull for miles. Very satisfactory! I wonder if the artist contemplated that, how easy it is to bust through the bindweed when it looks like it's winning.
I think she did, because the longer description in the book talks about the ease of changing the ecosystem from the incursive stuff, plus the Devil usually has that built in, that every problem contains the seed of its own solution, and that the person can direct their effort to breaking free of the bind. :)
