I had a similar experience with Hominids by Robert Sawyer - at the beginning of the book there's a gratuitous and unnecessary rape scene that was written like a guy who thinks he's being all sensitive and shit. There was absolutely no reason to have the rape on camera and could have happened before the book started. Any positives the book could have had were ruined for me (I was reading it for the book club I organize, so I had to finish it).

this is one book the reviews have definitely turned me off of... I have better ways to spend my time, especially since I've no subway commute to read on anymore.

With this new initiative to blog more, I suppose I'll have to start linking more stuff like this.
