When did they start displaying ads on LiveJournal?

I was looking at my journal from a friends computer and it has ads all over it.. whats going on! I thought he had a virus or something but it seems this has been happening for a while!

You can get ads on your LJ, and then for free you can have some benefits of a paid account.

hmmm... Probably over a year ago.

Then they stopped letting new users have "basic" accounts thus not being able to opt out of the ads unless you have a paid account. Though I believe they said that they were going to change back to the basic option being available soon.

I went straight from basic to paid so never see the ads.

Not all of them have to have ads,though.(Paid accounts and those who got basic accounts before they implemented the ads.)
