On a(nother) viewing of Death Proof...

...I have two wishes.

One is that someone, somewhere (perhaps the Alamo Drafthouse?) will do semi-annual showings of Grindhouse in its original format. Because I love it enough to watch it on my TV but any day, any time you want to show it in a theater I will be there shelling out money to do so.

And two is for someone to make me a gif animation icon ( Read more... )

I am not hip enough to have heard of April March before they made Tarantino's soundtrack but I'm really loving them.

I dig the name April March (good music too), but what I want to know is why no one has thought of the name April May. Their first album could be titled: April May June... and Then Again, It May Not.

...or, conversely, is that just about the gayest idea I've ever had?

Is It Just Me? ext_76345 January 11 2008, 17:37:56 UTC
Is it just me, or do you have some latent anger?

Not so much "latent" as "well-compartmentalized." Empathy and pacifism are gruelling work. Sometimes you just want to watch some cute girls beating the snot out of a serial killer to unwind.

I really much prefer Planet Terror to Death Proof. After the absurd, over-the-top gorefest the talk-heavy Death Proof was sopoforic. I seriously contemplated walking out during DP because I felt that it dragged horribly. I stuck with it because I figured the payoff would be worthwhile, but I left it disappointed.

I know various people felt this way about DP. It's a struggle for me not to just inform them that they're empirically incorrect. :P

That said, it's hard for me to extricate my visceral revenge-fantasy reaction from a more objective evaluation. I know pacing-wise it feels uneven. There are self-indulgent moments. But I enjoy them all so damn much I just don't care.

The female voices are incredibly genuine in that film. There are so few female action icons who don't make me want to vomit, so I love the chance to feel so emotionally involved in the characters here (which is one function of the talk-heaviness).

I've noticed that affection for this flick sometimes tends to run along gender-lines, for some odd reason. ;)

Well, honestly, I'd have preferred it if it were supposed to be a period drama or some other genre known for being slow-moving. In those cases, it would feel appropriate. I just can't handle an action flick that is so short on action.

To me, seeing Stuntman Mike beat up is of course fun, but even the chase sequence isn't thrilling to me. It's protracted talking followed by a protracted chase followed by a protracted ass-kicking.

Really, it might work better for me on its own. Planet Terror is all punchline and so non-stop that the order fails Death Proof. Perhaps flip-flopping the order would benefit both movies.

Sorry to trash your love, but, conversely it was one of my least favorite movies of the past few years.

...I do honestly think it helps if you've been run off the road by a maniac, or bullied by a sexually aggressive male, both of which have happened to me (more then once). Then there's a built in catharsis.

Like I said, it's hard for me to be objective, because I have a visceral reaction to the flick that sort of projects my own traumas into it. I'm quite prepared to accept it's not everyone's cuppa.

Damn, I could have asked for Grindhouse for Christmas. I haven't had a chance to see it since the theater either.

About the GIF, I hate to say it, but the icon sounds impossible to do within LJ's limitations. Remember the trouble with the "Shews" icon I made way back when? In the end, I found that you can only work with maybe a dozen frames of video (i.e. more than text or basic symbols) when making stuff for LJ. To capture that whole scene you'd need dozens and dozens of frames. On the other hand, if you wanted to capture just one of or the best series of blows (a few seconds worth of vid) you could probably create a nice little loop. Anyway, if you want, I can give it a shot if you tell me watch bit you want.

I think I would travel to see an annual showing with you.
