Halloween Movie Review: 30 Days of Night

Oct 28, 2007 00:46

30 Days of Night, like many quality horror movies, is not a horror movie so much as a survival movie. This is a trope more often found in zombie films, like Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later, than in vamp flicks: the humans must band together to fight the outside menace, usually hiding out in microcosms like isolated farmhouses or malls. Theoretically, wouldn't the cold not really affect vampires since they're technically supposed to already be dead?

It's true, Lestat wouldn't need flannel to get by in Alaska...of course, he'd flounce into town and promptly have the shit beaten out of him by a bunch of oil thugs for dressing like a homo. Rice vamps are just not hardy enough to take on Alaska.

Vampires are supposed to have superhuman strength, speed, and agility, though. I'd find it unlikely that even a bunch of oil thugs would get very far with that.

True...but then if Lestat won he'd be king over Barrow. Which has one bar, one grocery story, and a bunch of polar bears. So it would be a pyrrhic victory even if he ate all the oil thugs.

Either way, the bottom line is Lestat wouldn't be caught undead in podunk AK. Unless it was just long enough to grab a snack.

I'm impressed that this worked - I had blown it off as doomed. I'm definitely going to check it out, now!

Your talk of AK has just reminded me of the Most Scared I've Ever Been, which I'll have to write about soon!

You do have to write about that soon, I love people's scary stories. Is that predatory of me?

For serious...the early nineties were the only time Alaskan kids were "in the know" with regards to fashion. (Note that I say "Alaskan kids" in general, not "I.")

Of course, they're *still* wearing flannel, and there was always a decided lack of boys in eyeliner, which in my opinion is a crying shame. *fondly conjures vivid mental image of sexy grunge boys on TV, so very far away from Anchorage, Alaska*
