Junk

Jan 16, 2007 13:49

Sometimes I'm amazed by how much junk we accumulate over lifetime. School trophys, concert tickets, first sweetheart's love letter, 20 year old trip maps, old pictures of people we barely remember. Each one of us has a little box of stuff from over the years, from different eras ( Read more... )

a physical presence stimulates the mind more than just a mental picture of it...

i could argue with this. My mental capacity by far superseeds my stimulation by physical stuff.
I can imagine things more vividly than they ever are in reality.

Yeah. The sentimental attachment. It's like clothing. I steal clothing from people. Seriously. Mostly shirts. I have shirts from my first boyfriend and I still wear them occasionally. (Morbid eh?)

But other than that, the only thing I keep are pictures. I throw everything else out or get rid of it. Somehow. I have no problems detaching from items.
I found a bunch of letters from an ex, and ripped them all up and tossed them in the recycling bin.

If I don't see it or go through it, I can't miss something that's over anyway. You know?
For me, the past is the past and that is that.

You must think I'm a macbre person...

no, i think you're pretty cool person who is set in her own ways. that's your way of dealing with yourself and reality.
actually i like stealing shirts from people. one of my favorite t-shirt was stolen 5 years ago from my then best friend. I don't talk to him anymore, but the shirt reminds me of the times we shared together.

I'm such a pack rat and keep the littlest things. For me, it's as if I am afraid that if I don't keep something tangible then maybe I'll lose all remembrance of whatever it is that happened. That the thing itself is what represents the entirety of a memory(and of me?? hmm..). I don't have things gathered in a box and organized though, I'm a complete mess.. But lately I've been planning on throwing things away, so that I don't keep so much stuff. It is nice though to keep some things for maybe when you are older and are more forgetful than now. ^^ Oh, the tales you can tell. :P

take one thing at a time, and write a story in your LJ, then throw it away, because you can always go back to your diary and reread it. This way you won't have to keep anything, except your LJ in digital format.
it's fun to read stuff about yourself years later, you see everything under different light, from different perspective.

Perhaps more than half our house in drowning in things which are being saved for no good reason really but perhaps to prove to ourselves we had such experiences so we can feel more worthwhile, as if our lives have not been wasted, whether they really have been or not.

what happens if you throw away unimportant memories, or those you know for sure you'll never forget?

Some things are easier to get rid of than others. I recently had thrown away everything I had from when I was a child, yeah we still had it all. A few things I couldn't part with, the rest I felt okay with letting go of, like I didn't really need it anymore as much as I thought I did.

I rode my bicycle from Seattle to New York State one summer, it was not a motorized vehicle supported trip so everything had to be transported by bicyle. Really puts things into perspective.

Living in small apartments and moving many times has made me learn how to get rid of stuff too, it's fun when I come across something and ay "wow this is from when I lived in thus-and such!"

I moved twice with only things that fit in my car. It was very nice experience, unfortunately can't do it anymore - have wife... ;)))
