British humour

We (the family) got BBC Prime now. Very nice channel, no commercials. Funny/good content. I've been watching a whole lot of humour shows, all which I find very funny, even though they've not changed much since Monty Phyton or The Young Ones. Something which I'm totally okay with. Even the worse British comedy show is better than the average ( Read more... )

Sure the ones you think hve not changed much since Monty Python are not pretty old?

And men dressing as women for comedy purposes is or has been a great british staple of British comedy. It is rarely done these days, though you saw it in Little Britian which itself was pretty camp comedy.

We have something called pantomime here too and the 'Dame' or similar older woman figure is always played by a man for comedy laughs. Perhaps it is a throwback to when there were no actresses and men played female parts like in the days of shakespear.

By "old" i meant "from my childhood". Monty Phyton's Flying Circus is, after all, from 1969, before I was born. And kept going until 1974, still before I was born. Thus, it is old. "The Young Ones" is newer, from the year after I was born: 1982. Still quite old... 24 years, actually.

*nods* I think it is what you say though, from the days of Shakespear. Like, somewhere in the 60ies it was fun for historical value, and now it have transformed and transmuted into being just plain fun, simply. I just noticed since so many of the shows on BBC prime got such "ladies", and pondered "Perhaps UK is turning all transvestite on us...".. and bad images of Tony Blair entered my mind.

BBC Prime is one of my favourite channels. I love to watch British gardening and home improvement shows on Sundays. ;)

I'm jealous, I'd need to pay for a digital converter box and the digital channels to get any of the BBC stations in Canada.

There are some good US comedies. They just don't tend to last because they're so over-the-head of the average American.

And while I do love Monty Python, I wish we'd get more BritComs on BBC America. Instead, it's mostly "Changing Rooms" and such twaddle.

There are some american shows which I do like. Simpsons, Scrubs, and such.

What surprises me though is that even though USA have quite lame shows (Fresh Prince in Bell Air, Everybody Loves Raymond, Married with Children) they also have the best stand up comedians. Lewis Black, etc, etc. I tried to google some up, but I'm terrible with names.

Scrubs is great. Have you ever seen Arrested Development? It's quite brilliant, too.

America does have some really good stand up comics. But we also have some really bad ones.

What shows are you watching?
I've been enjoying rewatching League of Gentlemen series 1-3 a few weeks back on BBC Prime's saturday britcom marathon.
