I'd say you're right. Aro even claims later that human weaponry is advanced enough to threaten vampires and even if Charlie couldn't get one himself, I find it impossible to believe that Edward couldn't bribe someone for it.
Actually, you have to wonder why the VAMPIRES don't just arm themselves with these things. It's like Spoony pointed out in his Eclipse review - these people know when and where the battles will take place, they scope everything out ahead of time, and they don't bother to set traps or bring weapons or anything. And at least two of those folks fought in wars, for Pete's sake!
i think what edward meant is that the original quilute wolf could have possessed any animal, it didn't have to be a wolf, and then they would have been that animal rather than a wolf. which makes sense, even though it's stupid
