The whole whitewashing/ethnic apropriation thing is my biggest fear ATM. I'm writing a biracial protagonist and I'm trying to make sure he doesn't go too far in either direction. So on one hand, I can understand someone having trouble writing a character from a different ethnic background.
On the other hand, it's still no excuse for not doing proper research or, you know, ASKING SOMEONE FROM THE GROUP YOUR PROTAGONIST IS SUPPOSED TO BE FROM TO READ IT OVER! This story could've been so much better if the Casts hand someone who was actual Cherokee read it over and point out that the Mystical Native American thing is offensive.
I'd think the Goth bit would have a bit of a AU fail, since a lot of this-world goth stuff trades bits back and forth with post-Rice vampires... so why would it be the same? If vampires are well-known pretty people bound to Nyx, you'd think the goth-types would be tattooing moons on their foreheads (or as close as they could come without the racism police descending) and making prayers to Nyx and all that, but wouldn't much resemble this-world goths since they have a completely different underpinning for what a "child of the night" is like.
