Back to Kakariko

May 17, 2009 17:27

[A lazy day with nothing to do, and Sheik has found himself back to Kakariko like a moth drawn to a flame. He's cross-legged in the grass on the hill that the windmill stands on, leaning against one of the great stone sides in the shade with flute in hand - occasionally playing a melody, mostly just holding on to its comforting weight ( Read more... )

[The peaceful song of the windmill and Sheik's flute is interrupted suddenly by a horrible, terrified yell from inside the windmill. There's a crash, another argumentative shout, and the door to the Windmill's base opens below ( ... )

[The song Sheik is playing stops suddenly, sharply, a discordant note hanging in the air at sudden noise and action. With a practised movement, he carefully pushes the flute back in to its pouch, leaving his hands free as he rises to see what the commotion is.]

[A boy in a bizarre mask, and a destroyed music box, and a shriek from the man who stands and plays there.]

[The boy turns to peer downwards (at what? The well?), and an inexplicable chill runs down Sheik's spine. There's some danger here, but what, he can't quite pinpoint - a sense of chaos in the shadows.]

[Sheikah shadow magic was always the strongest here, in Kakariko, and especially concentrated near the windmill and well. It would be unwise to ignore it.]

[Stepping past the blades of the windmill, he jumps down lightly, standing a little distance from the boy and watching him curiously. He doesn't say anything yet.]

[One hand resting on the fence casually, the boy turns to regard Sheik at the soft sound of him landing. The mask's sharp black lines and bright colors clash with the subdued haze of laziness that the warm sun blankets Kakariko with.

The stare lasts for several long seconds, and finally, he speaks. His voice sounds like any other young boy's voice.]

Hello.

[After another beat, he turns to look back down at the well.]

How is the well drained?

[Sheik stares back at the masked boy, unable to prevent the uneasy sensation curdling in the pit of his stomach. The bright colours of the mask look inoccuous enough, but even a few seconds on the other end of that penetrating gaze is uncomfortable.]

[The question catches him off-guard. Why would anyone want to drain the well?]

I... don't think it can be. That's the village's main water supply, why would anyone drain it?

[She doesn't live there. She doesn't consider it home in any means, but perhaps there's a small part of her soul's counterpart that would define it as a sentimental place. Kakariko, as far as Zelda would know, is where her caretaker came from. There is probably a great story behind that, but in her progression of age, she's forgotten it. In the end, however, whether juvenile antics imply that she holds selective memory, or whether she has chosen to forget these stories, there can be no wrong in understanding her people, and extending her hands in aid.]

[On the other hand, these are not simply her people. After all, she is not the only her in the least, and she doubts that her other half is simply the only one of himself. As she walks in a calm stride, she cannot put aside that she met the one who represented a younger her, a much more youthful, perhaps innocent, and carefree her. It sinks in how she has changed, how she has matured, and she wonders if she is pleased with her transformation.]

[Zelda is not too terribly observant, ( ... )

[Sheik's observations that day are only idle - there is little to be on his guard for, and he's starting to adjust to this different, more comfortable Hyrule. The wariness of six years as an exile in a land he barely knows is beginning to slip away.]

[But he's still aware enough to spot the small figure passing by - or perhaps it is who is walking by in particular that catches his attention. In this time, he's more used to the idea of duplicates, so the sight of a girl that for all intents and purposes is the princess he swore his life to serve is not quite as staggering as it once was - but still, it gives him pause.]

[Silently, he stands, moving to the edge of the grassy clifftop overlooking the square and taking a seat, letting his legs hang freely. Where earlier he played songs of his own design interwoven with snippets of the warp songs, now he plays a careful rendition of the princess's lullaby, a way of simultaneously saying hello and reassuring her that he is no enemy.]

[Could she be any deeper in thought? As though a mind could only take feet and simply sprint across Hyrule's lands. The consideration is ridiculous, though, and the princess will be the first to admit it, though it's not likely she would share something so foolish out in the open ( ... )

[A few months ago, the question would seem utterly bizarre. But knowing the nature (of sorts) of the relationship between some of the princesses and some of his doubles, now the question only causes a small smile.]

No, princess - [Slipping the flute back in to its pouch, he jumps down lightly -] I am very much myself.

[Curiously, he watches her. From her question, he can assume that she has one of those unique situations where his equivelant sleeps within her, and he watches for... what? A sign? Something to show that?]

[Softly, he asks,] You have not been here for long, have you?

((OOC: Generally purple prose isn't a good thing, I was just commenting that my prose was more... ah, flowery than usual. Oh well, doesn't matter XD Sheik's canon dialogue is pretty damn purple anyway XD))

[It's halfway through something that sounds vaguely like the Minuet of Forest that he catches the sound of accompaniment.]

[A harp, and a familiar one, at that. Remembering his promise to visit, a small smile crosses Sheik's face, and he gets to his feet.]

[Standing up on the hill, he can see a small figure atop the watchtower. So he tucks the flute back in to its pouch and heads in that direction, stopping at its base. Cupping one hand around his mouth, he calls up.]

What is the view like up there, sister?

[Sheik grins back in response, swiftly climbing the tower to join his fellow Sheikah atop the tower. It's a pleasant view - it overlooks the entire town, from the stone steps that lead down to the field to the windmill and beyond.]

[Leaning over to give her a quick embrace in greeting, he settles against one of the guard rails and smiles at her.]

How have you been? Your letters - and Zelda's - said you have not been able to sleep because of that mask, have you got some rest since?

[At least the negative effects of his mask were limited to being stalked by fairies and being very very embarrassing. The mask she had sounded awful.]

That is a lovely song.

[Zelda tended to find herself drawn to the outdoors; being confined in small spaces for long periods of time tended to make her restless, stir crazy. Today was one of the days she had decided to get out of the inn, and stroll the village. She didn't really have a destination in mind, so when she heard music, she'd unconsciously wandered in that direction.

She hasn't met him before, though one could never be sure around here. It was possible she had met someone resembling him, or someone that could be his twin. She is no longer certain.]

Thank you.

[Sheik finally looks up from the flute, smiling at the sight of one of the princesses. For a moment, he thinks it's Jewel - the cast of her features is identical - but the hair is too fair. Jewel had mentioned sharing lodgings with a Zelda of that description, had she not?]

One of the Princesses Zelda, I presume?

Indeed. [Zelda dips her head with a small smile, clasping her hands together in front of her. she had always enjoyed music, though she had not met anyone who actually didn't. She gestured to his instrument.]

Where did you learn to play so beautifully?

[Sheik hides a smile, pleased and rather flattered by her judgement of his playing skills.]

I have always played music, I find it extremely relaxing. The Princess Zelda of my own time taught me much.

Do you play?
