I remain convinced that Gabriel reads tabloids. And I've no idea what Sam reads...(maybe it's his laptop wallpaper?)

I can see the hunter's diary thing - I've no idea if Dean would keep one, but Sam definitely would, if only to get it to Bobby so he can spread info around for other hunters - I know their profession is v. word-of-mouth info + research into lore, as the monsters don't come with 'to kill me, do this' manuals.
