it's really hard being an optimist in a class full of pessimists

I'm getting really sick of genocide being brought up as an actual solution to anything by students in my philo. class ( Read more... )

I'm so tired of people not being grateful for their life. This is not a religious statement as I am not, in fact, religious, but this is the statement of someone who could've died pretty easily but didn't. Watching your children die of cancer would be the most horrifying thing ever, but it's still life. Shitty or not. Tbh they sound naive for not getting how precious being alive is. It doesn't rock all the time, but that's just part of the whole being-alive jig. Accept it, try to change it, but move on if you can't change it. agggh

Exactly! They're relatively safe and they're alive, they should be grateful for it! Revel in it! Every so often I have a moment where I look up from what I'm doing and go "Wow... this is... real. I'm here." and it's kind of an amazing thing, when I think about it.

/hugs ;3;

There may be a situation in which genocide is the best answer from a certain moral framework, even a moral framework which may be embraced by a significant number of people, but it will not be an easy answer -- and I don't really want to think about what might prompt such a decision.

Yeah, and I have a feeling it would impinge on a lot of people's personal freedom. You know, that one where we're all supposed to be allowed to live.

The person who keeps saying this claims that Americans are "too safe" and that we're overpopulated. Urgh...

I don't really... get how a genocide would be a solution. At all. Seriously, what is their argument?
I think you should speak up. Even if you cry, it shows that you really do care about your opinion, and it's a weak point, anyway. Genocides solve nothing - just look at Nazi Germany.

Apparently Americans are "too safe" and we're overcrowding and our economic model is messed up (I will not argue that our economic model is rather stupid at times,) and that we "need" something big like a genocide to shake things up.

I think I really will if she ever tries this line of thinking again. It's just so... so infuriating ;~;

...so they just want to use it as a scare tactic? Aughhh so stupid. Still unsure how the deaths of millions will kick America into shape.

What...the hell.
She wishes that people could DIE so that she could be happy? That's the ultimate selfish person. I'm sorry, but she would like to have people die so that she can feel better about this Nation?
As for the second girl, well, damn. What happened to sticking it out? What happened to thinking positively? Freaking coward. It's the worst thing a parent can do, to bury their children, but it's worse to take your own life so that you don't have to do that, leaving your children without their mother.
Jeez. That's the epitome of selfishness.
Sorry for the rant...

Yeah, it was a.... very surreal class.

Upon reflection, I realized that the second girl has had strife in her life-- her mother died when she was little. One would think that that would make one... against mothers dying...?
