sleeping in hammocks is way overrated. they're more novelty than being a good (long term) bed. and if they were such good technology the rest of the world outside would have adopted it...outside of boats and latin, central and south america, they are rarely found. while a short nap in them is fun...they're not comfortable for extended periods of time. i've slept in several different kinds (mesh and non at different heights). . . tempurpdic matresses are infinitely more comfortable.
and portable beds? seriously, unless you're homeless or just plain weird and happen upon two trees or poles at the proper distance apart... there is no need for a bed to be portable, in fact -- it's at the top of my list of things to not get in a bed!
and since 1/3 of one's life is spent sleeping or in bed... it should be as comfortable as possible. 350 (or higher) thread count sheets are worth it.
