52 New Things and minor update

Jul 01, 2009 22:44

I've been kind of shut down with stress and unhappiness over work issues recently, but change is happening, and I think there's at least a 60% chance it's for the better. If not, well, I'd almost decided to resign anyway and there are always other things to do in life. I got to thoroughly exercise the part of me that likes conflict last week.

I wonder how much this relates to my driving posture, or to sitting in front of a computer with my right leg more often crossed over my left than the other way around.

The bodyworker in me read this and immediately went GAH! Don't sit with your legs crossed for any length of time. Preferably not at all. Very bad for you! Will mess you up in a whole raft of interconnected ways. Train yourself never to cross your legs, and your body will thank you for it for decades to come. /soapbox

I'm not even sure how I sit at work, but at home on the computer I sit cross-legged on the chair, leaning forwards towards the screen. For hours a day. It feels fun and casual and enhances my web-browsing experience! But I guess I have to stop. Thanks for making this point!

Just to clarify, by cross-legged I mean with both legs folded under me, so I'm leaning forward onto my ankles. I've sometimes tried to pretend that might be a good way to stretch things, but I suppose not!

Ah, okay. I thought you meant sitting with one foot on the floor and the other leg crossed over at the knee/thigh -- which please don't ever do. *g*

The way you're sitting is less screwed up, but still not great for long periods of time, especially since you're leaning forward, which is going to do weird stuff to your hips. If you were straight-backed and periodically switched which leg is on top (like several times per session), it'd be less troublesome... but you'd still be considerably better off sitting straight-backed, not leaning forward.

The work situation is like something out of a soap opera, except maybe a bit worse. I've laid out all my concerns, but am afraid that will do me damage in the long run, if there is a long run (which I don't think there will be, so it may not be worth worrying about!).

I'd forgotten how, when I'm really worked up about something, I think about it 99.99% of the day and can't really switch my attention away from it. I've been doing more reading on the differences between men and women (including that "Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps" you mentioned plus more of John Gray's books) and it says that's a feature of female brains - men can compartalise and get away from their problems for a while, while women often can't. It was absolutely exhausting me and affecting everything else I did. It remains to be seen how much things improve.
