I was amazed at how well done that storyline was, especially compared to the rest of the season. I can understand why they cut it--ideally, I think it probably should've taken place over two episodes and been referenced in a few others--but it was far and away the best storyline of the season.
Ooooh. This is a reason to get hold of the DVDs. Thank you for the detailed synopsis!!!
The only reason I can see it being taken out is due to Alan's storyline throughout the season - I don't remember seeing him even attempt a relationship with anyone towards the end. Which would lead to his marrying Denny; having come to a point where he's not chasing the idea of a woman any more?
Or maybe that's just me reading too much into it. ;)
They said in the commentary that it was taken out because it didn't have quite enough emotion, but I agree that it would have changed the marriage storyline some. I read a comment on the boston-legal.org forum that in the deleted scenes, it was pretty clear that Denny wouldn't be able to handle the idea of Alan with anyone, not just his daughter. That makes the marriage seem kind of sad, in that Denny wouldn't let Alan have a serious relationship with anyone else.

I really liked Liz, too, particularly the way she manipulated Alan into telling Denny. You could tell she was her father's daughter.
