Everybody's read Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain and knows the movie is in the works, right?  true_enough's posted 21 screencaps from the preview here.  I'm so attached to the story that I'm on the highly dubious side of ambivalent about the film, but true_enough is kindly going to go see it first and let me know if I'll like it ( Read more... )

Friend, I'm going step out on a limb and tell you right now you're going to love it but I promise to try and be more objective when I actually see the movie and let you know honestly what I think of it.

I think my assumption has been that if a relationship is too much work to build and maintain, then when push comes to shove it'll probably fail, where a relationship based on an easier natural understanding might not - but maybe the opposite is true.I've been trying to untie that knot myself. It took me forever to warm up to Mulder and Krycek because while I love subtext I tend to gravitate towards pairings who are a little more obvious about their longing. I've been toying with the idea of writing a manifesto for Gil Grissom and Nick Stokes but talk about a knot! While they're not antagonistic they also don't have that easy understanding of each other ( ... )

What I'm going to need to know is whether it varies from the story in, well, any particular at all!

I was going to say that there aren't many film adaptations I enjoy where I like the book, but that's not really true. I was thinking about it while spraying weeds today and came up with The Age of Innocence, Gettysburg, The Shawshank Redemption and (borderline) the miniseries of Larry McMurty's Lonesome Dove. Hmm, and some of the Hornblower movies. With all of those, I saw the film version first. ::is still actively afraid::

It's really nice to have you to enthuse about Brokeback Mountain with! I know several people who've read it, but as far as I know no one who completely fell in love with it in a read-it-100-times way.

I've been trying to untie that knot myself.

I need to find a pairing where I can like and admire both characters, but they just rub each other the wrong way, to work this out on. Mulder and Krycek don't work for me because I see Krycek as a Bad Guy.

Oooo, I agree wholeheartedly with your adaption picks especially The Age of Innocence and The Shawshank Redemption.

The feeling's mutual. For me it was one of those stories that just wouldn't let me go. I remember reading it real quickly right before work and I had lines and images running through my head all night. It just moved me the way few things do.

I need to figure out a way to explain the appeal of Gil/Nick. The characters are sweet, complex, a little odd and so good once they get together.

I couldn't go to see *Little Women* for ages because I was so invested in the book. I couldn't bear for the movie to be less than it and then to diminish my memory of it. As it turned out, I love it in a completely different way.

What worries me is the visuals from a bad film version infecting and corrupting my own mind's-eye images!

In Lonesome Dove, one of the main characters is supposed to be significantly shorter than the other. In the miniseries, he isn't, and it bothers me every single second he's onscreen! When I read the book, I kind of go with the TV version of one character and my own version of the other.

I'm probably being silly. If I don't like the movie I'm sure I'll manage to fight off its harmful effects! It's just that I'd really like to see it done right - MY idea of right of course!

Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction. Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Oh, that's lovely! I can see getting very sentimental about the attitude expressed here. In my little worldview, I'd like to write a story about a relationship that reaches that place after having started off in a more conflicted one, so the peacefulness achieved has a special wonderous quality to it that comes with achieving a state probably never expected.

I love Brokeback Mountain, too, but my stomach's been all clenched up about the movie ever since I first heard about it. I love Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet" and I want to trust him to do the story justice, but...but...but....

The good thing about my never going to films when they come out is that I get a chance to read many spoilers before the DVD is available. I'll be looking forward to hearing what true_enough and you have to say about it!

Yep. Somebody sent me this link to a video clip of the preview today, though, and it looks promising!

I haven't seen The Wedding Banquet, but I like (the non-fantasy parts of) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

true_enough will see it long before me, sigh.

Thanks so much for the link. Okay, that lifted my spirits a bit more. If Hollywood can do right by this one story, it'll make up for the other gay potential in movies they've deliberately downplayed in the past little while.

Will the movie not reach Australia for a long time, do you mean? That sucks.

I haven't seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it's on my (very long!) list of ones I want to see. :)

The Australian release date I can find is January 26 (compared to Dec 9 in the States). I didn't see a Canadian mention other than at the Toronto Film Festival.

CT, HD is definitely a love story, though not a happy-ending one! Plus, horses, swords, great scenery.
