Thanks for posting your China series of pictures and commentary, its been fascinating! I love armchair travelling. In Vietnam they do the same thing in parks and public spaces - lots of groups or families doing classes or playing games. I liked the lack of generation gap there, people of any age go out for the evening. It felt very communal and safe.
Fascinating is the right word. It was so much more interesting than sightseeing in Europe, enjoyable as that is! You may have found the same when you went to Japan.

It does make more sense to have small personal spaces and large communal ones.

There were so many questions I couldn't ask because of the language barrier. All I could do was watch and wonder!
