Update, with archery

Aug 07, 2014 11:48

I'm now into both my work and property busy season and am trying to juggle things so I can somehow free up time to read Fool's Assassin in the middle of next week! I know what I'll end up doing is searching for "Fool" and reading those sections first, which is clearly not an ideal plan ( Read more... )

My coworker is an avid archer, does it every weekend and gets his cool weaponry delivered to work when he buys new (insanely expensive) equipment. Interesting, as I am sure a gun would not be delivered to a Government office, but apparently bows and arrows are OK.

The first point in the pamphlet they gave me when I bought the bow is "Always remember that a loaded bow is a weapon." You definitely wouldn't want to be around anyone who didn't have that thought firmly in mind. I was a bit shocked to find myself thinking on the first day I had the bow at home "I could aim at the horses! I could aim at my car!" Er, no.

Oh, that is so cool! And looks like all kinds of fun. I did a bit of archery (and was good at it) in sleep-away camp when I was around twelve or thirteen. It was one of my favorite camp activities.

Your Legolas-style equipment is entirely awesome. We are fanpersons. We understand these things. :-)

Also: When you talked about losing track of arrows that miss the target, I immediately thought of how a dog could easily be trained to go sniff them out for you, and what grand fun that would be for everyone concerned. (As long as the dog was restrained until firing had ceased. Dog, do not anticipate! This is not a good idea with pointy things!)

That's a good idea about using dogs. Maybe bow hunters do that. It must be really, really difficult to find arrows fired from a more powerful bow into the bush, when it's this hard to find them fired from a beginner bow in a flat mowed paddock.

I never tried it growing up and don't remember really wanting to until seeing Lord of the Rings. Apparently it's enjoying a surge in popularity among kids and teenagers thanks to The Hunger Games!

Maybe your disc golf skills are directly transferable to archery!

Awesome!!! I do want to do archery with you, I do! I do! I've been trying work out the best time and email you. I'm going to a non-violent protest training course this weekend at Jarrahdale but I could come up Saturday arvo next week and we could have a Persuaders revival in the evening? Or just the Sunday?

Your course sounds interesting!

I have an alpaca workshop all day on the 16th. I'm free on the 17th (I may be obsessively reading the new Robin Hobb book, though if all goes well I'll be done by then). C might enjoy archery if you want to bring her some time? huckle's 12-year-old loved it and now wants to take lessons.

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't reread the Narnia books in years and will see if I can locate my childhood copy!
