I had a 1997 Gateway 2000 90 that i loved and gave me no issues.. Gramps gave it to me as a 14th birthday/christmas gift.. I loved it.. He bought a slightly better 1998 model a year or so later and it was also a good unit, although it had 2 repair issues... Then he bought a 3rd one in 2001.. Althought it survived until this year, it was good for nothing more than typing in word.. He never bought the extended warrantys on his.. That last gateway lasted 18 months, and even then it was never right..Johnny had a gateway that laster 8 years with no issues, and i still use the moniter to this day. I have always bought dells until recently... My last 2 laptops have been Toshibas... The first toshiba died because it was an early model vista unit and i think i did something to it.. This current one i really like and has been a good computer, i bought it off the shelf from wally world and got there warranty, so if it dies in 3 years i just walk in wth my recpit and walk out with a new one of the same cost.. The one dell laptop i had died at

To Add: My 97 Gateway lasted 9 years as well... It finally died needing a hard drive and mother board.. A computer friend in asheville took it and made a mega computer outta it
One more thought: If you paid for it with a credit card, check with your credit card company.. Some will allow you to dispute the charge if you never get the computer back (what you originaly paid for it).. I had bought a Sony Trinitron TV in 2002 and had gotten a 5 year warranty with it through sears.. After they lost the tv in 2004 i contacted Capital One to see if i had any recourse becase i had bought it long before.. They disputed the charge for me and listed the reason as "Unsatisfied with the merchindse/warranty and credited the full $400 back to my account and sears never said a word. I never saw my tv again, but hey, i was able to get a new one
