Pelicans on the weir

Jul 26, 2009 13:30

About a week back I headed down to the wier on the Bow river here in Calgary on the advice of a friend. She'd mentioned that there were pelicans feeding in the outfall of the wier... sure enough! Figuring sunset would provide some great shots, I headed down there.

Oh god that takes me back! I remember when we had pelicans on our weir in Saskatoon. Beautiful! Now it's just goddamned seagulls. I wonder where they went...

Unfortunately the Harvie Passage (http://www.harviepassage.ca/), aka Bow River Wier Project, is going to result in Calgary losing it's pelicans. The weir is a congregation and feeding ground for them. With it being removed, they'll go somewhere else.

I'd rather see them string an anchored net across the river upstream from it than get rid of it. I'm not terribly keen on millions being spent to change something that isn't broken and in fact brings wildlife right into our city. The only danger with the weir is people being illiterate or irresponsible on the water.

"Drowning machine" seems like a pretty loaded word. "Think of the childwen!" Ugh. They might have a point with some of the environmental arguments (ecosystems and fish spawning), but damned if the term "drowning machine" doesn't put me off the project every time I hear it. Anyone stupid enough to swim near a weir deserves what they get.

I'm sorry for the loss of your pelicans. Enjoy them while you have them.

Wow... gorgeous shots and NEAT! Pelicans.... hmmm, I've never seen them in my city and always associated them with warmer climes... probably cause first time I saw em was an eery night in magical Seville, Spain, flying in hot inkiness to ancient stone chimney tops.
