Pierre Tielhard de Chardin was a Jesuit priest, biologist, philosopher and paleontologist who helped develop the teleological concept of orthogenesis: the idea that evolution is not a random act, but occurs in a directional, goal-oriented manner. He also coined the term "Omega Point" which describes a culmination of the evolution of consciousness

And so precious little on his involvement with the Piltdown Man hoax. Sigh.

I think the thesis that de Chardin was part of the Piltdown Man hoax (as opposed to being taken in by it) is pretty much discounted nowadays. There is no real evidence he was; Gould's thesis that he was involved was partly based on assertions which have been shown to be factually incorrect; and the hoax doesn't fit at all well with de Chardin's character and personality.

Fascinating. I learned a lot of new words. Speaking as a layman though, I see lots of holes in the theorizing even though as a Jew, I think the eschatology is somewhat similar - when everybody on Earth finally gets their act together, all the dead will be reawakened and we'll all recognize the oneness of G-d.
