Author John M. ("Mike") Ford has died.

He was a frequent contributor over at Patrick and Teresa Neilsen Haydn's Making Light blog, and they have a ton of links up to his writing and work. I loved Mike's stuff -- he was a brilliant, talented writer whose work was truly innovative ( Read more... )

The highest compliment I could ever pay him, and I say this as a fan of his short fiction, was that he was the only person who could get me to read Star Trek novels after 1985, but only if his name was on the novel. I never met him, either, but I'm going to miss him.

I'm going to miss him too.

When I was under 10, I was addicted to Trek books. Since then, I've read perhaps five or six and one of them was "How Much for Just the Planet." I liked Peter David's take on TNG, too. Other than that, the entire genre isn'tis crap. It's not even satisfyingly mindless pulp/junk reading.

That, other than a short story or two, probably from books like this, was my first real introduction to his work.

Let's put it this way: I'll not only admit to liking The Final Reflection, but I'll still recommend it. And this comes from someone desperately sick and goddamn tired of the whole Klingon subculture of fandom.
