~The colors of the rainbow shine so bright, every time I look into your eyes

Jun 11, 2015 10:33

Sorry if I haven't been around much, the last couple days haven't really been great. It's been really hard to get my thoughts together to talk to people, and I know I've been lagging behind on emails and comments and such and uuugh. I wish I could say that things will get better soon but I'm not sure they will. I'm doing better right now than I was a few days ago, but it's still not exactly good.

But hey! I finished the thing! So that's something, right? Come take a look!

Behold, the Ace Attorney rainbow! I'm aware black to white isn't part of a rainbow but shut up.

I got the idea believe it or not from wondering about Larry and Athena meeting and talking about clothes, then I remembered that Larry was orange and Athena was yellow, then I wondered if there was a character for every color. AND THERE IS. I really only meant to have one character for each of the ROYGBIV colors but I should have known that was a fool's errand, I'd never show that much self control.

I wrote up a quick list of characters that fit the color requirements, but I ended up cutting some to try and get this under control. SO THIS IS THE TRUNCATED LIST, BELIEVE IT OR NOT. Notably Blackquill, Mia, and Courtney from AAI2 got cut from the black section, April May and Simon Keyes (AAI2) cut from pink, Dahlia from white, Dee from grey, Alita from yellow, and Katherine Hall (AAI2) from green. SOME OF THESE CUTS WERE HARD TO MAKE BECAUSE I LIKED A LOT OF THESE CHARACTERS but I had to draw lines somewhere. Another notable omission was Lisa Basil for blue which still bugs me a bit because she is practically completely blue, but for the life of me I just couldn't bring myself to add her for some reason. Which is weird since I liked her and all. But the blue section as it is is already pretty big (I probably could've added Alita though, the yellow section is small)

Apollo and Clay are waving to each other! Because they're so cute ugh. I had to do some character shuffling once the colors were down and I noticed some shades were darker or lighter than I remembered (see the rough in the last entry for the original order). Calisto and Debeste were originally next to each other but I ended up splitting them up since Debeste's blue was darker than I thought it'd be. Which was awkward since they were meant to go together with her laughing at him and all but oh well. Maybe it still looks like they're interacting even with Phoenix and Hugh between them. Likewise, Lotta and Gumshoe used to be next to each other but I shifted Courte between them, but they're less far apart so maybe it's not noticable.

Debeste and Hugh feel a bit redundant, but it felt weird just having Robin since Robin and Hugh's thing is a red/blue dichotomy, and I just wanted to put Debeste in it. SO THAT WAS JUST FAVORITISM. Interestingly despite both wearing Themis uniforms, they are different shades of blue. Also, all of Phoenix's suits are different shades of blue. I think here I used the color of his original suit from the trilogy since it fit the progression better.

I love Norma but setting down her color made me realize she's more brownish-grey than grey and she stood out a little, so I moved her to the brown section but she was too dark and threw that progression off, so eventually she went back to the grey section. IT'S A STRETCH BUT WHATEVER I LOVE HER SHE STAYED. See also: Byrne, whose blue is really more grey than blue but I felt like drawing him so there he is.

When I thought white my mind immediately went to Bruce Goodman and apparently for good reason because he is seriously almost completely white. Even down to his shoes. After all this time I still remembered that. MEMORIES STILL LINGER FROM MAMBOLAWYER PERHAPS. Fulbright comes close but Goodman is whiter than he is.

I love Kay and wanted her in this, but as an adult she has a lot of other colors offsetting her pink, like her scarf and her skirt, so I couldn't really put her in for pink since she has a lot of colors going on. Her kid outfit though has a bit more pink to it, thus why she's a kid here. It actually transitioned surprisingly well into Edgeworth's magenta.

I really wanted to add Shelly but he only wears disguises, and most of them were colors already covered, so I let him go. :< I wonder if I should've added him in the bellboy outfit though. I would've also added Wellington but the blue section was already so full.

Matt is a bit of a stretch since only his shoulders are red but i'm biased for 2-4 so whatever. Incidentally, his red was by far the brightest, way brighter than Apollo's or Robin's even.

Adrian was a last minute edition since I was thinking of her in her 2-4 outfit (MORE BLUE) until I remembered her T&T one is actually solid black. Which is kind of unique, she may be the only character wearing solid black. Even Viola has some white spots on her (I totally forgot about her, oh well, she probably wouldn't have made the cut anyway).

In retrospect actually I could've added Furio Tigre to orange but whatever, Gant kind of covers his shade anyway.

Grossberg is holding a lemon in one hand. :B Trucy and Valant's capes are both way too long and also cut too deep on the fluttery edges but I love drawing people hidden in huge capes and you can't take that from me. Also it helped accentuate their color scheme.

Acro and Phineas weren't originally included in the lineup in the outline stages, but I added them later. I can't believe I almost forgot them! I thought about doing Gregory for grey, but with his coat in AAI2 I think of him more of a khaki color than grey. I could've dropped his coat, but then he's kind of just Payne 2.0 in the lineup.

This is NOT height accurate because taking that into account uuuuuuuuuuuuuuughhhhhh. Some are roughly taller or shorter than others but it's not super accurate.

I used the fantranslation for the AAI2 characters' names, I thought about doing their Japanese ones but eh, I dunno. Maybe I'll swap them if it comes to it.

Weird things I learned while doing this:

Klavier and Sahwit's suits are the same color in their official art, but Sahwit's suit is a way lighter pink in his sprites and Klavier's is more muted than I thought.

Phineas Filch wears ninja shoes! And has a bunch of keys around his neck since he's the groundskeeper I suppose.

Athena's shoes are probably meant to look sort of GYAXA-ish.

Cody has a watch.

Robin's bangs flip outwards when [DD spoilers]she's a girl and inwards when she's disguised as a boy.

Gant's skin is lighter than I remember it being. Same for Acro.

Apollo has pretty dark skin compared to most of the other characters. He's the darkest protagonist I think.

I can't believe Redd's ears aren't pierced.

I've drawn Yanni about a billion times but even so I apparently eyeballed his colors originally and didn't take them directly from his sprite. As such some of his shades when I directly palette matched surprised me. The black edges of his coat are more brownish.

Gant's black color has a distinct bluish tinge to it.

Edgeworth's suit varies wildly from red to magenta. It's redder when he's younger though.

There are a LOT of blue characters in this series, dang.

Morgan looks like she's wearing solid black in her art, but her sprites are actually wearing more of a dark grey. Admittedly if you pick the darkest shade from her sprite it'd look closer to black, but still, it's lighter than I thought. She was originally the first, but after doing her colors she moved up from black to grey.

Fulbright wears red white and blue, haha. AMERICA. He also isn't wearing socks.

I lightened Redd's rings and Apollo's bracelet because I always thought it was weird how dark those two things were.

Max Galactica is insanely pale. He's actually probably the palest character, since eyedropping his sprite's light areas had his skin AS PURE WHITE. Also I always remember him as pink but he's really more purplish.

gd magicians are obsessed with cards in Japanifornia. Especially Max. JUST COVER YOURSELF ALL OVER WITH THEM MAX, WHY NOT ugh so annoying to do

Trucy and Valant's suit markings on their outfits don't match normal card suit colors. Like the black suits are spades and clubs, and the red suits diamonds and hearts, but they both have blue diamonds and pink clubs. It totally threw me while doing their cape symbols (Max's colors are right though)

Gumshoe's coat is way more grey than green, which threw me since I always remember him as green. BUT NOPE, IT'S VERY GREY. It actually just gets more grey as the series progresses. I grabbed the greenest tinge but still, he kind of throws the green section off.

Apollo and Trucy have almost the same hair color but not quite.

Clay's jumpsuit is a surprisingly saturated blue, especially compared to his coat.

Maya's hip ribbon switches sides in the art they did for Phoenix Wright vs. Prof. Layton.

Ray's little pocket notebook is pink.

Adrian's notebook in 2-4 is pink, which makes me wonder if it reminds her of Celeste, since Celeste apparently wore a lot of pink. :< It's orange in T&T though.

Acro's wheelchair is weird. It has no armrests.

Anyway as I mentioned in the comments in the last entry, I had three images in mind for how to color this. Above is the full color one.

Here was another thought, where each character would be their solid color. This looks cool for some, but really falls apart for characters like Fulbright, Goodman, Valant, and Cody since their colors are so light. Could possibly look better on a darker background though.

And here was the last one, where they'd be monochrome except for the highlighted spot of color for each character. This actually looks pretty cool I think, and it makes the rainbow progression a lot clearer since it clears out other distracting colors on the character. The full color one is cool because hey, details! But I like the spot color one too.

Anyway the way I set this up it'd be pretty easy to isolate out a character if for some reason I wanted to use these chibis for other things. Who knows? It was kind of nice to sit down and draw a bunch of characters I liked but hadn't actually done anything with, haha. I'VE DONE PW FANART FOR YEARS AND I'VE BARELY DRAWN MAYA, IT'S WEIRD

this took so long to do, jeez. WELL AT LEAST ITS DONE.

I also posted this at dreamwidth with reluctant ambivalence. Comment here or there, don't matter to me!
