~Fun with Space Quest I - Ulence Flats

Nov 04, 2007 01:12

Tee hee.

ANYWAY HALLOWEEN WAS GREAT there are pictures but I probably won't show them to you because I'm very paranoid about people knowing what I look like, since I'm convinced someone will somehow use that information to axe murder me in the night. SINCE I AM ALWAYS AFRAID SOMEONE IS ABOUT TO MURDER ME REGARDLESS OF THE TIME OR LOCATION, YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY HESITATION or not, since it's rather baseless. At least, as far as I know. Man I am all over the place right now wtf.

Anyway Sheeners dressed up as Rosella, from KQIV. And it was all awesome. Well except for the part where my glasses fell out of my pocket and I lost them. Which I think is the first time that has ever happened to me. We looked and looked but somebody either stepped on them or threw them or stole them or something. >( So I ended up getting some new glasses. I was due for an eye exam anyway.

Maybe I will put all the pieces of the Yanni costume together and take a picture, or something. Or blur out my face, or something, I dunno. WHY AM I SO WEIRD ABOUT THIS KIND OF THING

I feel like there was something else I should mention and now I'm blanking. Oh yeah, a few days ago I had the weirdest nightmare again where I was playing a Phoenix Wright game, same format, interface, sprites, all that, and trying to solve some murder or another, and then it got to that point where all the pieces started to come together, and the witness I was talking to said something like, "Her name was Mary, she slept in an upside-down y position, and" and then at that point, the entire game (well, the world since i was kind of in the game and playing it at the same time, you know) started to get staticy and distorted, there was this horrible screaming noise with an air raid siren, and then Pyramid Head ripped through the screen. It was kind of weird, since normally I'm all WOOHOO YAY about Silent Hill, but I seriously did not expect that at all so I was fairly shocked. Although I think a part of it was this realization that a crossover between Silent Hill 2 and whatever case I was working on made perfect sense. Kind of that same chill I usually get when you find out exactly how something happened in a PW case and it all starts to make sense. Or maybe that's just me.
Anyway, it ended up waking me up which was annoying. At least, I thought it did, but then I had another one of those dreams within dreams where I went downstairs to tell someone about the SH/PW crossover dream and then some guy busted through the kitchen window and killed me, which also wasn't fun. wtf, brain. You have no reason to be giving me nightmares.

Oh yeah almost forgot OMG THE TUNAK TUNAK DANCE OH WOW that's so awesome :D :D :D Oh Tunak Tunak Tun I love you so.
Also I think I'm totally fascinated by disco dancing. Or maybe disco in general. EITHER WAY.

ANYWAY Roger done skimmed some sand. WHERE DID HE END UP?

WOO WE'RE HERE THAT GUY BY THE BAR LOOKS TRUSTWORTHY
Ulence Flats (Galbadia Mirror) is slinky and sleazy sounding, like that downtown diner and that whore who gave you herpes.

YOU'RE NOT GOIN ANYWHERE

Heh, semi-bleak.

Wanna work the streets, doll? Gots the legs

Hee hee hee

Hey wanna know something fun? :D You can say yes here, take your 25 buckazoids, and then nothing bad will happen to you.
However, if you DO, then when you actually LEAVE Ulence Flats for the next area, you will get stuck. Forever. And your save game will be useless! :D It's for moments like these that you REALLY NEED to have more than one save. For ALL sierra games because YOU NEVER KNOW if they'll do something like this.

NO I REFUSE HAGGLING IS FOR QUEST FOR GLORY FEEBS

Oh yeah, by the way, if you leave that key in there and go off the screen, that pimp guy will steal your skimmer, then you're broke AND stuck for the next part! :D Awesome huh? I like how there's no mention of the key anywhere unless you look at the skimmer and specifically remember it. PAY ATTENTION TO THE MESSAGES IN THE GAME, IS WHAT I'M SAYING. ALSO LOOK AT EVERYTHING.

You can actually run into that electrical barrier. Three times, as a matter of fact! Then you die. I didn't cap that though because it didn't occur to me, sorry. :O I just automatically know to stay away from the electrical field.

Leave the screen and come back, and Pimp is back! This is good, cause sometimes in other Sierra games someone will make an offer only once, and if you don't take it, then you'll never have another chance and you're screwed again. SAVE OFTEN IN MULTIPLE SLOTS, PEOPLE! I CAN'T EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH.

Hee hee, little old Thark. But yes, the jetpack is what you need for the next area. It's not optional, you can't progress without it.

Haha Chamber of Commerce, sure buddy.
I can't remember if he gives you these coupons if you take the first offer. Eh. They're not essential, necessarily. If you remembered that magnet thing from the Arcada. YOU DID PICK THAT UP, RIGHT? Well if you're lucky maybe it won't matter.
MAYBE.

DROIDS-B-US! :D :D

Haha typo.
As a side note I will never stop being amused at the currency in Space Quest being buckazoids. Hee hee.

INTO THE ROCKET BAR WOOOOOO
There are three groups that perform, and whenever you enter the bar it randomly chose one. This was the first one I got. CAN YOU RECOGNIZE THEM? THEY LOOK KIND OF FAMILIAR, DON'T YOU THINK?
Each has their own theme. :D The Rocket Bar (Part One) (Galbadia Mirror) is some catchy, upbeat piano stuff with some little synths at points to kind of emulate singing. If you catch the reference you'll know the style of the song. 8D

hee hee.

You can do this with each band that's in here, by the way. You'd be surprised how many little text messages are in here.

LET'S PET THE KITTY

PET THE KITTY

I really thought this would kill me but I guess not. OH WELL.

I'M WAITING FOR AN IMPORTANT CALL

We already saw that in our last installment. 8D

Ah yeah, while you're doing this or walking around in here, those little purple guys are constantly ordering beers, then drinking them down and yelling at each other. It's fun to watch. :D

SEZ YOU

Roger: :D
Bar: ...

KEEP TRYIN, ROGER!

WHY YES SHE HAS THREE BOOBS

Like that would REALLY stop you, Roger.

Hahahahahaha

Ah, notice what happened back there? The guy playing the slot machine? Yeah, that laser up there zapped him into dust.
GUESS WHAT SLOT MACHINE WE'LL HAVE TO PLAY! :D

Hmm, that's fairly cheap for a beer.

YOU KNOW, FRESHEN THINGS UP A BIT, SURE

I'M ALMOST READY TO HURL, GOT TO GET THERE FIRST

I HOPE YOU'RE PAYING ATTENTION AND THAT YOU ALSO FIGURED OUT THAT DRINKING BEER WOULD GET YOU SOME INVALUABLE INFORMATION WE'LL NEED IN THE FUTURE
SECTOR CC WRITE IT DOWN another thing that changes with each game, like the data cartridge and destruct code.

The Deltaur is that mantis ship that killed your chicken. :(

Anyway, enough of that! LET'S RIG THE SLOT MACHINE, FELLAS!

This is why I mentioned that it's not necessary to get the widget, but it's really helpful. Basically, you need cash to get out of here, and this slot machine is the only way to get it. However, if you're playing it legit, there's a good chance that the skull and crossbones will come up, which means instant death. Of course, the simple way around this would just be to save after every success, but that takes time.
However, the widget simplifies things enormously, making it so you constantly roll high matches and earn lots of Buckazoids quick. SO it's really in your best interests to pick up that widget. However, if you don't, it's not the end of the world.
For once.

Ladeedah, earning some money, woo woo

Oh yeah, this guy randomely approaches you outside the bar occasionally. He does not have a watch for a head, I'm just a moron.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

What do you think happens if you follow him? :D
I actually didn't though, for some stupid reason. I should have, adurr. Anyway, he mugs you and/or kills you, I can't remember which right now.

WOO DROIDS B US DOES THAT LOGO LOOK FAMILIAR?
Which actually brings up our first bit of trivia about Space Quest. Originally, the store was called Droids R Us, a more blatant rip on Toys R Us, and Toys R Us was very much not amused by this, and they sued the Two Guys from Andromeda for it. Thus they changed it to Droids B Us, which I guess is just different enough or something. I think they may have added that ripped logo though in the VGA version, which I like to think of as a big "#^#@ you" to Toys R Us. Hahaha.
Anyway, not the first time the Two Guys got sued for this kind of thing. LAWYERS AND SPACE QUEST DO NOT MIX WELL, AS WE'LL SEE. I don't know why Toys R Us would get all huffy about it, it's not like the game is mean about them or anything. Whatever.

DOES IT LOOK FAMILIAR? ANY OLD SCIFI FANS AROUND HERE THINK IT LOOKS FAMILIAR?

WAS THAT ENOUGH OF A HINT hee marvin

DON'T JUDGE ME

WOO YAY

I love the music in Droids B Us so much. :D It's so weird and irritating, but I LOVE IT TO DEATH. I HAVE PLANS FOR THIS MUSIC. SUCH PLANS. YOU'LL SEE SOON ENOUGH. THIS THEME IS GOING PLACES.
Droids B Us (Galbadia Mirror) on a Roland MT-30 soundcard
Droids B Us on a Soundblaster soundcard, which is way more irritating and also way more awesome at the same time. :D :D Seriously I can just groove out to this for like hours, I never get tired of it. SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS THEME. Which is why I ended up recording it for like four minutes. :B The little weird beginning is before I walked into the actual store.
I always played Space Quest with a Soundblaster card back in the day (since that was the one I had and all) and yes, your sound card made a big difference in how things sounded. Just listen to the difference between the Roland and the Soundblaster to see what I mean.
Nowadays I always set my old Sierra games to Soundblaster, since that's how I played them when I was younger and otherwise they sound really weird. I had someone get on my case about it for the Space Quest III opening though. Pfft, whatever.

We're not giving out free sandwiches, if that's what you're wondering.

WHAT'S THIS A REFERENCE TO? ANYONE?

Hahaha. HOW ABOUT THIS ONE? :D

I just love that phrase so much.

Hee hee, New Japan IV.
All these droids are specific homages to other famous droids, if you haven't picked up on that so far. :D

VUX sorry

I'd like to stack them, is that okay?

I KNOW AT LEAST SOME OF YOU MUST GET THIS ONE

This one I'm not very familiar with. :B

Heh, Over-zealous.

The only one with no price range. :O

AHA, BINGO. I'M GETTING THIS. Well, later.

Hahahaha I can't imagine how that could possibly have a downside.
If you're curious, there is a cap to how many buckazoids you can make off the machine, and it's not a lot. Not only that, but you still need to save up some dough for another bit coming up.

Arnoids! If we continue through the series we'll see some of these suckers.

FOR NOW

I don't know why but this just cracks me up endlessly. I DUNNO

LUDICROUS SPEED

Ah, here's where you get mugged, if you follow the guy. I think there's still occasionally a risk of running into him back here if you idle around.

HMM, WHERE COULD POWDER HAVE COME FROM?

Wooooo

Anyway, the other reason why we're hanging on to all this money! We need somethin to get us off this rock, after all.
Tiny's Used Spaceships for all your ship selling needs. It's a weird little theme.

As you may have guessed, you need to make enough money to both buy a navdroid and a ship to get out of here. Or maybe you wouldn't have guessed that. WELL THAT'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO and you better hope you buy the right ship and droid. That's a bit easier though than some of the random things to figure out in this.

Darn it, I really should have bought some of the wrong ships to show you the death scenes but I guess i just slipped into ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME mode at this point and just went through it. :B
If I recall correctly, this one shoots directly into the center of the earth.

HEY A SKIFF

You can afford this one, but I can't remember what happens if you buy it. Dang.

Here we go, this baby is mine.

Anyway, popping in and out of the bar to get the other musical acts, and HEY LOOK ITS ZZ TOP :D They're playing some hard rock (Galbadia Mirror) and it actually sounds pretty awesome if you ask me. The Studio Version is even better, with this great shredding guitar and everything. It's too bad Sierra game remixes are as rare as a golden catfish that grants wishes. :< I really think a huge selection of music for remixes is being untapped here guys these are all awesome.
More fun trivia! ZZ Top found out about their appearance in this and were less than pleased, and promptly ALSO sued the Two Guys. :O I don't know why again, it's not like this is unflattering or anything. Who knew ZZ Top had no sense of humor.

Hee.

You can only earn about this much with the widget. And I think normally too, but I've never had the patience to try.

WELL THAT'S ENOUGH MONEY ANYWAY

And our last act! Ah, Madonna. With a rather goofy sound to it (Galbadia Mirror), hehe.

EVEN ROGER HAS LIMITS GUYS

I have a feeling the Two Guys did not like Madonna very much. 8D

ANYWAY let's get goin! Woooo
If I remember right, if you buy the wrong droid I think it might wander off without you. Or explode on you. I should have really checked this out, doh.

ALRIGHT NOW WE'RE GETTIN SOMEWHERE

And again, I apparently completely blanked and didn't cap Tiny talking about the ship or anything after you buy it. He specifically mentions you need a droid to be able to use it, so there's a hint I guess. 8D

TINY! :O

Hahaha that Time Pod is actually a reference to Space Quest IV. No seriously. 8D

Wheeeeeee!

Will Roger make it to the Deltaur and destroy the Star Generator?!?!?! TUNE IN NEXT TIME!!

space quest i, screencap adventures, sierra games
