Yes, it's been years and I'm still bitter about that epilogue. I was not curious about it ;-)
Still, given the MPAA, so long as there's no sex, the ratings aren't remotely consistent. It's also entirely possible to make it more dark by doing stuff off screen, and that would still lead to a lower rating.

Well, apparently that was one of the first things she wrote when she started the series, which explains the huge contrast in tone from the rest of the book it's attached to.
And the first two books I think could be considered more for children. The third one on, though, not so much.

True, and there's never a language issue, either, and I'm pretty sure the MPAA focuses heavily on that, too. I can't see Harry dropping any F-bombs just to up the rating. :)
