I loved this ep. I just hope Show isn't lulling us into a false sense of security before pulling the rug out from under us again. I really hope this is the start of something new that will last awhile.
There's so much potential here. For me, introducing groups like the Men of Letters and the Judah Initiative widen the scope somewhat and give this world more depth. It's really pared down to Sam and Dean so much recently, and lost the sense that there's a network of hunters out there. Not that they've discovered a vast community(one recently deceased grandfather, one clueless Jewish guy, and one golem don't go very far), but it's a start.
Also, it's refreshing that the creature in this episode was not actually the evil thing they were hunting, but someone willing and able to help.
I have mixed feelings about it. I liked it when we found out that the Winchesters weren't the only hunters around and that there was a loose-knit hunting community out there. But with the Men of Letters and Judah Initiative and whatever other sooper seekrit societies we've never heard of (because they're apparently shocked that hunters have opposable thumbs) roaming around out there, Show is starting to wander into X-Files territory.
Now I loved The X-Files, but I don't want Supernatural to be The X-Files. I prefer Supernatural when it's just a bunch of blue-collar guys (and gals) rolling up their sleeves and getting shit done. And yet I still love the MoL bunker and I want to see what's in it.
