Many sites are archived by The Wayback Machine at Archive.org, but that doesn't grab all sites. Someone named Jason Scott recently wrote a blog post about one particularly egregious recent incident of massive data loss, and founded a bit of an organization to help protect against losing our digital history.

The archive sites there are awesome. Found my old website. A shame pictures are too large to save up as well.

It's especially sad for all the pixel art tutorials out there that vaporize. A chap called East had a lovely little tute on drawing tree leaves on gamingworld forums - all vanished now. @_@
