Roguelike programming - I/O and UI

During my month off for the baby, I managed to go for two-and-a-half weeks without programming. But the bug bit, so here's my first post about it. It's a Roguelike, which is an ASCII character game, initially a way to play an obsessive single player D&D-style game on mainframes in computer labs. If I ever get it done, you can be sure I'll make it available! Isn't that the only reason people do pet projects? Fame and fortune?

Oh, wait. It's a turn-based ASCII game. Okay, so maybe there's a third, obsessive reason.

And my nerd avater is from Adom, probably the most accessible (if any can be) of the traditional fantasy Roguelikes. It's my favorite, anyway.
