Part 7

Logan walks back and forth in the playroom, a slight bounce in his step, Jonah strapped to his chest in a Baby Bjorn.

Logan is holding a pacifier against Jonah's cheek, which, periodically, Jonah sucks hopefully into his mouth while Logan does the patented new-father -"please please please please let this make you happy for a few more minutes" -pacifier-jiggle.

Jonah isn't having it anymore and begins to cry and arch his back. He is hungry.

After Veronica had cried herself back to sleep, Logan had slipped from the bedroom in search of Elsa and his son.

"Smells like Mrs. Navarro made a pork roast, you should go get yourself some dinner. I'll take over," he told her.

For almost an hour, Jonah had snuggled contentedly against his father's chest, opening his eyes occasionally to peek at Logan. His eyes had been as blue as Veronica's on the day he was born, but were changing now, to match Logan's dark brown ones.

As Logan flipped through the channels on the television, he came across one of his mother's movies, a romantic comedy called "Good Advice." He'd forgotten about the movie, and kept it on, remembering that his mother's character in the film was named 'Veronica'.

Although he was sure it was just a coincidence, Jonah turned his head and opened his eyes when Lynn Echolls began speaking on-screen. Logan had stroked Jonah's cheek and whispered, "Hey buddy, you see your Grandma on the television? She would have loved you so much. She would have known...she would have known you were a miracle." Logan turned his attention back to the television, lest Elsa or Mrs. Navarro come looking for him and find him choked up over a mediocre movie.

When he had begun to fuss, Logan had quieted Jonah for a few more minutes by placing him in the sling and walking around, but the baby's patience had run out.

Hearing his cries, Elsa comes back into the playroom and helps Logan remove his son from the Baby Bjorn carrier. The baby immediately dives into Elsa's cleavage, but not finding his mother's scent, begins to cry in earnest.

"Well, he needs a dry diaper, but I'm afraid after that we're going to have to wake his mommy," Elsa says.

Jonah adds his hearty agreement with a particularly piercing wail.

"How can he go from perfectly content to totally hysterical in 5 minutes?" Logan wonders outloud as he and Elsa work together to wrestle the angry baby from his sleeper, his onesie, and the wet diaper, and maneuver him back into a dry diaper and some fresh clothes.

Elsa gives him a playful look of scorn as she picks Jonah up from the changing table. "He's a baby. It's his nature! And his perogative!"

Logan disentangles himself from the straps of the sling. "I'll take him up to her," he says, as Elsa carefully passes Jonah back to him.

Nine months earlier

"I think I need to sit down," Veronica told the doctor, perching on the edge of an overstuffed chair in her sitting room.

"Dr. Gallagher, can you tell me what happened to Logan on that movie set? I really...I don't understand anything that's happened in the last three days."

"Mrs. Echolls," the doctor began, "I'm afraid there's no delicate way to ask this, but, are you quite certain that your husband is, er, responsible for your pregnancy?"

Veronica rolled her eyes at the doctor.

"Unless I am carrying the second coming of the Lord in my uterus - and I think we can agree that THAT is extremely unlikely - this baby is Logan's baby. I haven't been with anyone else," she paused, "that way, since my high school sweetheart fled the country with his illegitimate love child born from his dead girlfriend."

Dr. Gallagher looked taken aback.

"I'm sorry," Veronica said. "I guess if you didn't know about that, it does sound like something out of a badly written soap opera. The point is, I'm pregnant and I haven't had sex with anyone other than Logan since 2005! So, would you please tell me what's going on?"

"When Logan came to me, he was healing from a massive trauma that included severe injuries to his abdomen, ribs, and groin," Dr. Gallagher began.

Veronica winced. The doctor continued, "Mr. and Mrs. Echolls stated that Logan had been trying to dismount from a particularly volatile horse, that the horse had thrown him from its back, and then subsequently stomped on the boy several times."

Veronica said nothing.

"There was massive internal bleeding, injuries to his ribs, but, the groin area sustained a great deal of damage.  The doctors at Memphis Children's, from what I can tell from their reports, were concerned about whether or not normal sexual function could be restored."

The doctor looked at Veronica pointedly.

"I never would have guessed that," Veronica said, astonished.  "They must have worked a miracle, because, Logan....Logan doesn't have ANY problems in that department.  I've been with him for five years, I think I would have noticed."

"I suspect it was a combination of good luck and world-class surgeons that healed your husband in most respects," the doctor said.  "But, the reports all indicated that his vas deferens was crushed by the force of the injuries and irreparable.  The reports indicated that Logan would almost assuredly never become a father in any normal way."

"Did you tell Logan that, when he was FOURTEEN?"   Veronica asked angrily.

"No, I shared that information with his mother.  Mrs. Echolls was insistent that Logan not be told until he was older.  She was concerned that he might...be less cautious in terms of his health, in terms of making the kinds of precautions we prefer teenage boys to take, if he knew that pregnancy was not a risk he was taking.  He was open with me about the fact that he was involved, sexually, with a girl, the girl his father was accused of murdering," the doctor paused, trying to recall the details.

"He was having sex with Lilly Kane.  Who his father bashed over the head with an ashtray," Veronica supplied, fuming.

"Yes, that was her name.  Lilly.  Mrs. Echolls was extremely concerned about her son's relationship with her.  She didn't want to give him an excuse not to be safe.  Well, safer."

"When did you tell Logan about the extent of his condition?" Veronica demanded.

"Not until his father was arrested and he was emancipated."  Dr. Gallagher answered.  "He didn't believe me at first.  He insisted that he was '100% normal' and he insisted on running a test, which of course we did."

"And?" Veronica asked.

"And...there was no sperm in the sample we tested.  None.  It was a perfect post-vasectomy outcome, and a horrifying outcome for a 17 year old boy.  He was extremely upset about it.  I remember his reaction because it was so unexpected.  He said, 'That bastard stole everything from me.'  At the time I assumed he meant the horse, but, with further information that came out at Aaron Echolls trial...well, hindsight's twenty-twenty.  It's clear to me now that, whatever happened in that horse barn, it was very likely not the fault of the horse."
