Being wise with your money isn't bad. Not going into debt for a convention is not a bad thing at all. It's responsible. Maybe once in a long while you could go to one if it that might be fun for you, but I tend to shake my head and wonder when I see those who go every single year. Sometimes more than once per year. I can't justify the cost. There's always something else I would rather save the money for or spend it on... usually at less cost.

Feeling guilty EVERY time you spend a little isn't healthy, though. It's okay to reward yourself here and there. If you have a healthy savings, and the price isn't outrageous, I see nothing wrong with a treat once in a while.

is not that I feel guilty per se, I just have this crazy mental game against myself where I reach wealth thresholds, and I consider it a failure whenever I dip below that -- while also trying to get to the next goalpost.

Going into debt for fun is a no-go for me as well.

But don't forget to have some fun at times. It's no use ending up sitting on money and not remember how to have fun

surprisingly, accumulating wealth is kind of fun... my goals is always to reach a certain amount, then have it not drop below that threshold, while also trying to reach the next tier.

Very good post.

I think the key for a trip anywhere is planning and saving.
I've saved up for my southwestern road trek and I'm finding out with each passing day just what it takes to stay out here on the road. (Hint: having friends with couches has been a godsend)

Cons where fun but such as a passing fad, life and other priorities have intervened in my and my con going friend's lives and we just haven't been in sync to go again. They can be expensive also.

What I recommend is....invest in yourself. Your more then worth exploring the country or checking out a con or event you like. Just save & plan and when the time comes, you have a tidy vacation done YOUR way.

Also, making my first ever visit to Texas tomorrow! :D
