Forced nostalgia

Back in the mid-'90s, I played sax in a local alt-rock band called Long Flat Red. We had a measure of success, at least in Atlanta and some of the Southeast (the scene was waaay different then, mind you) and had a pretty sizable fanbase. This was the band that was offered the infamous Taco Bell contract, played a NYE show at the Roxy, won a ( Read more... )

OH the nostalgia I feel reading this! I remember when Long Flat Red was still called Yonder and you were playing at a burrito place and I was convinced you guys were going to be super-famous; I was so young and ignorant of the ways of the world then...

I think I only have one actual LFR recording, and it's on a scratchy old mix tape. It remains precious to me.

It looks like this Kavarna place is of the smoke-free variety, which means I can come to the reunion show! And either enjoy a fun show or pick through y'all's bloody remains. (But I'm hoping for the former!)

In purging my cassette tapes last year, I ran across a bunch of old LFR recordings, mostly live stuff, that I didn't know I had. Some of the recordings are pretty okay, some sound like they were recorded with an answering machine. I don't seem to have the recordings we did at Ardent Studios right before we broke up; I think Thom may have them, though. I know someone posted our entire Live at WREK set from '93 or so online recently, which I'll have to surf around to find.

It is good to know that Kavarna is possibly smoke-free (I'll check up on that), b/c that means Britt can come too.

Let me be clear on one thing: This is not a Long Flat Red reunion show. This is a Lydia Brownfield solo show, with ex-members of LFR in attendance as spectators. If she decides to play any old Yonder or LFR songs (which, according to Thom, she still does), then great. It will be without the rest of the band.

Yeah, re-reading your post, I see that. Disappointing... I've seen Lydia solo, and she's still a good songwriter and performer, but it's not nearly as exciting as the band was. I'll probably still go, though, if for no other reason than that I haven't seen you in literally years. And I'm trying to go out while I still can!

This large file was labeled as a four-song demo, and it might actually be some of the Ardent Studios stuff since three of the four are later songs. The sound was slightly better than the four-track stuff we had done, but the sax is buried and there are no backing vocals (a source of tension during the sessions).

Tracklist:
1. Temporary (3:14)
2. Roots (3:46)
3. Big World (5:08)
4. Stranded (10:25)
