The End of an Era

Britt and I cleaned out the spare room of the condo last week ,with the sole intention of stocking her mother's neighborhood garage sale last weekend.  In removing the detritus I had accumulated for several years, I decided that now is the right time to unload some of the past...and I didn't want to do it at a garage sale.  I know Craigslist is the ( Read more... )

The soundtracks of a generation!

Actually, I had the Top Gun soundtrack in there as well, but someone at the garage sale bought it.

I am loathe to get rid of my tapes for the same reason you don't want to get rid of yours, even my worn out dubs from my metalhead cousin's tape collection (Master of Puppets!). Maybe I'll turn mine into a lamp or something:

And/or I could pull out the J-cards and make a giant mural from them or some such. I'm sure the art could be reappropriated in some way. It seems a shame to just toss them.

I LOVE the idea of the J-card mural (would make a nice coffee table découpage too), but if I have any hope of getting rid of these tapes they're going to have to be complete matching sets of tapes and covers. The lamp idea isn't bad, but a lot of my cassettes are that ivory opaque color and not at all uniform.

I already have an offer for them, but it's embarassingly low. Still, it's the only offer so far.

How many of them never made it to CD? It seems that these should be digitally archived in some way.

How much are you hoping to get for these?

I haven't gone through and researched thoroughly, but there are some EPs, remix EPs and cassingles with tracks that I've never personally seen on CD. With reissued remasters and expanded editions, this may not be completely true anymore.

I didn't really have a firm figure in mind, but I have to weigh sentimentality versus practicality. Yes, it's my adolescence for sale; but yes, it's on fucking CASSETTE. I talked the one offer up a bit, but it still seems a shame (unless someone expresses further and more generous interest, they're his). Britt was amazed anyone wanted them at all, let alone was willing to pay money for them.

I still haven't managed to get rid of a single one of my tapes yet, even the ones that no longer play. I know I need to, I know I'll have to, but I'm just not ready to say goodbye to them yet.
