Southwest airlines is having a sale that ends tonight. So I on a whim got my mom and I tickets to go to Austin.

I feel bad because Jerry isn't (and can't go because of his work and school) going.

Awesome! Have you been to Austin before? I lived about 20 minutes south of Austin for about 10 years, but I moved to just north of Dallas about 3 years ago.

Why did you choose Austin? Any specific plans there?

I have been, yes. And I love it. We're going to try to move there once I'm done with undergrad. I was going to apply to UT for a grad program but I've decided I'll probably move there even if I don't get in (which is likely, since it's UT).

Since I'm going with my mom, we'll probably do "mom" stuff. Like the garden and the museum on campus (both of which I find to be enjoyable) I don't know what other things to do with her. Have any suggestions?

And how do you like the Dallas area? I've never been there.

Honestly, as far as suggestions go, I would probably just head down the strip by campus and explore the city. You could always go to Zilker Park or the lake too. That's what I love about Austin though. It's a pretty fun time just wandering around a seeing the interesting shops.

I don't really head into the Dallas metro very often, and I'm only ever passing through when I do. I spend my time in Denton, which is a little north of that urban jungle. Politically speaking, the Austin area is far closer to my sensibilities, but in an area as large as Dallas, there are bound to be good things happening. Denton is fine, but it isn't home, and I'd love to find my way back to central Texas when I'm finished with school. Where are you coming from?

Yeah, we'll go to Zilker since the garden is in Zilker. But your right, there is a lot to explore in Austin.

I live in Wisconsin... go to school in Green Bay. It's been somewhat exhausting (politics, the climate, the northern accents) and I feel like Austin is where I belong. I love Texans and the south and Austin being as liberal and "homey" as it is just seems so fitting for me. I love that it's a big city but feels cute and nice, know what I mean? It doesn't feel stressful...

Good for you! When is your trip planned for? I love the botanical gardens at Zilker. We had our family pictures taken there last November.
