I never heard the term used prior to the proliferation of people communicating via the Internet.

where I was stationed in the Army (1990-1994), asshat was already a very common conjunction for "asshole in a hat".

e.g. - anyone who has even the slightest bit of authority and chooses to abuse it any given chance possible, including and particularly in venues where their "authority" holds no weight whatsoever.
