I never really liked the ST models either. Never caught on I think due to the size/weight and lower hp. However the BMW RT and VFR seemed to dominate the ST area for a while there.(in my own opinion)
I don't see myself having a larger bike with less hp than the little yzf, so it never got me. They make less than 100hp right? Something like 80hp at the crank I think.
I was hoping Ducati would come out with a medium sized tourer, maybe an 800/848cc since they dropped the ST completely. Similar to what they did with the Multistrada - had the 620 and 1100. I believe with a smaller engine/lighter stature, it would have been more my cup of tea.
The looks never won me over either. It looks like a cross between a mid 90s Kawi and a VFR in the front and the supersport in the back. Weird combo. Touring in the front, race in the rear... mullet?
I wonder if Ducati is going to come out with another Sport tourer. I hope so. Especially since Yamaha dropped the 600r and Honda dropped the F4i.
I did a quick search - looks like the most recent ST4S puts down 117 hp with 72 ft lbs of torque. The ST3S has that 3 valve per cylinder motor, putting down 107 hp - I think I could make due with that.
The weight felt like it was carried kinda high in the chassis, and ground clearance was limited. When I go as fast as I want to go on my Couch-a-saki, I don't feel like it's holding me back. I felt kinda limited by the capabilities of the ST3.
Interesting comparison of the looks of the bike - I totally see it :)
The BMW R1200S might be the worlds most potent sport tourer - it sounds SINISTER with a race pipe! The HP2 is even more bad ass - one of the local fast guys routinely wins races on one against the fastest 1098s, 999s, and Superbike spec GSX-R750s in Northern California.

I could do with 107hp.. I guess :P A higher center of gravity would not be a good thing with the size on the ST. If it was more centralized, do you think you could have pushed it a bit further or was the geometry/suspension what made it fell like it was holding you back
