Well, I got the meat at least.

Weekend was fun. Went up to Nutley, NJ for Tina's housewarming thing. Went out to Medieval Times with a large gaggle of people. Was fun stuff, even if our knight wasn't the greatest ( Read more... )

I recently watched "The Lottery" which is, if you go by the trailer, very similar to "Waiting for Superman." I wonder how they'll compare.

So I was at Medieval Times twice this weekend. Are you sure you're not moonlighting as the red knight because he TOTALLY looked like you!!!

I'd like to watch that movie, but from what I know of it, it seems like it paints a biased view of education from the outside - things that we would like to idealize but is dismissive of reality. I'll have to reserve further judgment till I watch it, but I know a lot of really good teachers (coworkers) who felt attacked by the movie/documentary.

Well, like any good, honest documentary, research has to be done and verified, so while it might seem like it's looking at education from the outside, it has the research and data to back up their message. Though the argument can be made that their message is flawed (like most Documentaries.)

And it's more against the teachers' unions than against the teachers themselves. Hence, that one quote in the trailer "When you see a good teacher, you're looking at a work of art!"

Dustin~

I wrote and posted a long response, but then I didn't really want to subject a bunch of people to it, especially since I have no real outcome in mind, just voicing my (complicated) opinions :O

If you'd still like to hear it, I'll email it to you, because education does mean a lot to me (well, it's my job and career!), and at the very least, I think that those who watched the documentary and agreed with and/or supported the views should at least hear someone from the other side! Extra points coz I'm not blindly angry ;)
