Negotiating is overrated to Liam Neeson

Saw Taken Friday night with kev, Krys/ryoko and Paul/x_manbloodclot. If there was an Academy Award for "Best Badass" it would to go Liam Neeson in that movie, hands down. Easiest way to describe his character in that movie--imagine if Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop had a daughter and was retired and had (Jet Black's detective skills)3. Because he basically brought down ( Read more... )

let the right one in, academy awards, liam neeson, youtube, oscars, bruce springsteen, the wrestler, movies, taken

Check to see when LtROI was made...I don't think it can qualify if it was made prior to 2008.

Also no matter how awesome it is, it's a vampire movie. Just like no matter how amazing In Bruges is, it wasn't going to win anything because it's a shoot 'em up. That's just how the Academy rolls.

IMDB says October 2008 Norway. And it was released 2008 in the US, so it was very eligible.

Genre or not, it was still a very good movie. Hell, Silence of the Lambs was basically an R-rated horror movie, but it still won Best Picture of 1991. Some things do transcend their genres . . .

Yeah but this isn't one of them. I mean Swedish or Genre, I could see but not both. It wasn't even availble everywhere in the US, we never got it at all here. It was just too obscure even for that category.

You also have to remember, the Academy is not obligated to watch the nominees. Which is why Slumdog won so much...for all the people who voted on it who saw it, there were probably several who voted for it because they basically have been told by the media "hey this is an Oscar movie."

All of my anger about the Oscars ran out the year Gladiator won. Because seriously, no.

I highly doubt all the Foreign Language Film nominees over the years are ever widely available. I wanted to see Raise the Red Lantern back in 1990, and the closest place playing that was in Philadelphia when I was living in South Jersey.

And the matter of the film transcending its genre or not, that's a matter of opinion, of course!

the best thing about taken was the fact that it busts the archetypes of typical storytelling. protagonist typically is supposed meet some sort of resistance from the antagonist that seems insurmountable that he/she must dig down deep to overcome and ultimately succeed.

but not in taken. qui-gon just begins kicking ass, and aside from the one boiler room hiccup, doesn't really ever stop until he settles the quickest, most efficient negotiation in the history of movies. it's like playing super mario bros as fast as you can, and only getting shrunk once before finishing out the rest of the game as small mario.

Yeah, that's been in the works for a few years now. Glad that it finally got passed.

Now the only issue is trying work with the unions in Philly. The UFC doesn't put on shows in NJ anymore because of the unions (apparently they sometimes lose money because of them.) I can't imagine things being much different in Philly with the stranglehold the unions have in the city.

Still, the UFC has stated they wish to put on an event in the  CoreStates, First Union, Wachovia  whatever-the-fuck-they're-calling-it-now Center
