If people stocked the breakroom with fruit, the only person who would eat it would be you. Which means it would go bad. Which is probably why the fridge smells the way it does.

Fine. It doesn't have to be stocked, but a little nutritional option certainly isn't going to hurt anybody.

I've always thought that to be a figure of speech that doesn't need to be over-analyzed. ...But if we're going to...

I suppose the strength of a lacking is equal to the need of the thing which you do not possess. You can wish for something and not have it, but shrug it off as a flight of fancy. However, needing an item you do not have creates a stress that only accentuates its missing status.

In other words, the more urgently you need or desire something, the stronger your feeling of lack.
