Post Teneras, Lux (notice)

May 24, 2014 16:16

I have received notice that my fic, Post Tenebras, Lux have offended certain parties. This is understandable, especially because there are 'homophobe' scenes within the fic as well. I sincerely apologise if to the offended party, and must add that I have nothing against homosexuality of any sort.

:( *hugs*

I haven't finished reading the fic myself and I get why people might be offended--but that's a good thing imo, not something to apologise for (if readers went yay!!! at such a scene, then that'd be :/). Issues like this are addressed in fiction all the time which I appreciate because sweeping them under the rug and pretending they don't exist in reality doesn't do much. In the future, it might be a better idea to include something sensitive as homophobia in the warnings, just as a lot of writers do with racism, rape, murder, death etc. I think it's okay to write about such issues and while people have different trigger reactions that are impossible to predict, giving a brief 'heads-up I will touch on xxx-issue in this fic' might help avoid ppl from being offended.

Ah, you may be right :(

Issues like these are touchy, and I'm sure as hell gonna remember to put warnings for this type of scenes in future.

Sometimes, i just wish thing alike this were as accepted in real life as it is in fan fiction. *sigh*

I get what you mean but I feel that there's both sides to it: there's reality and then there's feelings being hurt by that reality. I do think it's a writer's prerogative to decide what warnings to include or to include them at all. After all, stuff on the internet and even novels don't come with warnings and apologies for potentially upsetting the reader. Again, I think it's good that the reader was offended by an offensive scene. You did it to add a layer of realism that you've taken in from your environment, not to promote hate propaganda. I think there's a strong difference in that. I also think that if we only wrote characters that adhered to society's idea of social justice and morality, reading wouldn't be half as fun or engaging. I just hope nobody confused your character's voice and thoughts for your own (and if they did, you cleared that up <3).
