Marcel Pagnol, La gloire de mon père
"Good morning Yeonjin-nim! How are you today?"
She diverted her gaze from the window to look at the nurse that always attended her with care. Yeonjin almost didn't recognize Junsu, but his smile can never be forgotten.
"I'm feeling a little sad, today, Junsu. I fear... that my grandson will not come at all."
Junsu rearranged her bed, while keeping her steady.
"Did he promise to come?" Junsu inquired.
"I don't remember clearly," she sighed as she lay back on the bed, "I just wish I could see him soon. I feel so lonely in this cramped room."
Her room was in fact quite spacious for a retirement room. It was painted in light blue, and a big window, several meters from the bed, allowed the sun to shine in. She had some furniture that held her personal belongings.
Junsu stopped his work and looked sympathetically at the elderly woman on the bed, "It's not so cramped, is it? And besides," he started, before leaning closer to her, "Am I not taking good care of you?"
She weakly pushed him away, a graceful smile adorning her face, "It's not the same, silly."
Junsu sat on the chair next to the bed, "Why wouldn't a grandson visit such an adorable grandmother? Young people these days don't know how to cherish their elders!"
"Junsu-yah, do you even go out? You sound like an old man, " she chuckled.
"Then I'm perfect for you, aren't I!" He laughed.
Suddenly, they heard a rapid knock on the door and one of Junsu's colleagues entered the room.
"Junsu, there's an emergency. We need you at the front, now," she said, panting as if she ran to come here.
A look behind him and he answered, "Alright, I'll be right there."
But she insists, "You must come! It's one of your patients; he's..." She made a dead face and Junsu understood.
"Yeonjin-nim, I have to go. I will--"
"Don't go! I don't want to be alone," she said.
Junsu was already standing up when he promised to get someone to talk to her. He felt bad, but he must do his job. When he got out of the room, he saw a young man standing by, looking lost.
"Are you Jung-nim's grandson?" Junsu asked the guy.
"Yes, I am," the other replied.
Junsu sighed, "Oh god, you came at the right moment!"
He started to direct the man towards Yeonjin's room, making it clear that he had to get in.
"Did you know that your grandmother wished everyday she could finally see you? Aish, what took you so long!" Junsu said before rushing to the front, "You better go talk to her! Or you will have to explain!"
Yunho stood there, dumfounded, when he heard someone calling.
"Grandson?"
He decided that, whatever, he was going to explain everything to this lady and she would understand that he wasn't her grandson. He read the door tag, before entering the room. However, seeing the old woman smile in glee at his sight, he felt that it was going to be more difficult than he would've thought.
"Hello, Jung Yeonjin-sshi. I am Jung Yunho, nice to meet you," he bowed. Grandson or not, he still needed to be polite.
"Oh! You don't have to be so polite, Yunho-yah! I'm glad I can finally meet you!" She was visibly excited. "You can call me grandmother, it'll make me happier," she beamed.
"About that..." he wanted to start, but she continued.
"Why don't you take a seat? The trip must have been tiring."
"Oh, it wasn't that long," he replied, before sitting down anyways.
The retirement house wasn't that far from Seoul; it took Yunho thirty-five to forty minutes to get there.
"I know!" She suddenly said and Yunho hoped she had realized by herself that he wasn't related to her.
Well, he hoped in vain.
"Go to that drawer and take the book with a flower on top, will you?" She demanded.
Yunho didn't know what to do. He felt very so uncomfortable. He sighed and then stood up to get to the drawer.
"You are so tall, Yunho-yah. How old are you?" She asked, while she kept smiling.
"I'm 23," he replied. Finally, he found the book, which was heavier than he thought it would be, and brought it to the woman.
"I'm going to assign a flower to my first encounter with my grandson," she tried to sit up and, rolling his eyes at himself, Yunho helped her.
"Jung Yeonjin-nim, I'm sorry, but..." He started. He found that he couldn't say it.
"Yes?" However, she was expectantly looking at him already.
He sat back down on the chair, "What is this book?" He smiled sheepishly.
Jung Yeonjin was 78 years old. She had been in the retirement house for long, too long for her taste. Her son left the country 10 years ago and her daughter died in an accident, a little over 18 years ago. She never had contacted her son since he left and it was at this moment Yunho began to wonder if Yeonjin-sshi really had a grandson. He looked at her, taking in all of her frail fingers, flipping through the book, still searching for the perfect flower. He looked at her long greying hair, which framed her face quite prettily. Behind the wrinkles, Yunho could guess that she had been a beautiful woman. Since the moment he entered the room, she kept smiling, and this little fact made him feel guilty.
"I found it! Look at this beautiful Celandine. It represents the joys to come," she showed Yunho the said flower.
Yunho held the book in his hands once more and while he looked at it, he found that it was in fact an album, completely handmade. A hundred of pages filled with delicate dried flowers, their picture equivalent and a short description next to the plant.
"You made this?" Yunho asked, impressed.
She fondly smiled and nodded, "Do you like the flower? The meaning fits the moment, doesn't it?"
"Yes, yes it does," Yunho agreed. "So, every flower has its meaning?"
Yeonjin nodded. For her, flowers existed sorely to make her happy. Hearing that, it made Yunho laugh. Also, knowing the meaning behind each flower, allowed her to connect with their beauty, their every component, until she knew them perfectly.
After a moment, she took the book back and closed it on her lap, "Let me get to know my grandson better!"
Yunho let out a small laugh, and agreed.
Junsu heaved an enormous sigh. The days when patients die were always the hardest, both physically and mentally. He had to make sure everything was being taken care of, like checking the patient's will and calling the relatives. Talking about relatives, Junsu thought about Yeonjin-sshi and wondered if she got to meet her grandson. It was soon going to be seven o'clock, so he wouldn't find her asleep yet.
"Yeonjin-nim, I'm back to see you," he said, poking in his head.
"Junsu-sshi! Quick, come in! I have so much I want to talk to you about," she said when she saw him.
Junsu did as he was told and closed the door behind him, "What is it? I feel like something good happened to you today."
"He came! My grandson came," she beamed.
Junsu also smiled. Seeing Yeonjin's smile made his heart at ease.
He saw the book on her lap and asked, "Is this the flower for this event?"
"Yes, he said he liked it. Do you know that he is very handsome? He is tall and lean, and he studies in Business!" She said, evidently proud of her grandson.
"He stayed for how long?" Junsu inquired.
"Oh, I don't know...Two hours? Time flew and before I knew it, he had to go back to Seoul," she pouted a little.
"Did he say that he will come back? Because if he doesn't, I'll personally go get him," Junsu exclaimed.
It made Yeonjin laugh, "Maybe he will. I want you two to meet. However, even if he doesn't come back, this will always be the best day I had here."
Junsu smiled, "You do look better since you met him, Yeonjin-nim."
"Why, thank you! He was very kind towards me too, you know! I may not need you anymore, Junsu-yah!"
"Well, I'll always be around, even if you need me or not, sorry!" Junsu laughed.
Seeing that she was getting tired, Junsu prompted her to sleep. He tucked her in and said goodnight. Silently closing the door, he went out of the room and he was already relaxed. Talking with Mrs. Yeonjin was always a delight for him. He got along with her better than with any other patient he had. Junsu smiled at the thought while taking his belongings from his desk. The day was over, and he was greatly thankful for it.
