Be Sure to Search for Possible Other Gifts! And What to Do if Something is Wonky About Your Story

Dec 25, 2009 12:03

Given the disparity between Yuletide signup names and AO3 usernames, and the bug issues with usernames qualified by pseuds, you may have gifts you're unaware of! Many people have multiple stories, but the way the recipient's name is on them may vary, depending on whether they were uploaded before you created your own AO3 account, and whether they ( Read more... )

You're so right.

I've just discovered an 11,000-word gift that I was completely unaware of!

o.O ... *is flabbergasted* ... o.O

It's directed at my pseud.

Anyway, I'll be over in the corner, reading...

The story at http://archiveofourown.org/works/32693 is showing up in my gifts, but is definitely not for me. I assume it's for someone else who also has the backup pseud of Raven, and I've no idea if this may mean someone thinks they're missing a story. When the site's back enough to get to the support pages I'll raise it as a support call with AO3, but I was worried it might look like a missing fic/default for someone.

No, notifying us is good -- it's not truly a technical issue, and AO3 doesn't know who was assigned to whom. *g* Thanks!

Me again -- actually, this is another bug, whereby if a story is for "Raven," then everyone who has the username or pseud "Raven" sees it in their gifts. It's something they're working on, I think.

Cool, I'll not worry about it then :) Thank you!

I actually have two stories listed as gifts for me that aren't mine!

Apparently someone signed up on Yuletide with the username Cimorene, which also happens to be a very old psued of mine. I registered it with AO3 when I got my account in anticipation of uploading some of the fic I wrote as Cimorene ages ago.

So, when someone gifted this Yuletide Cimorene, they actually put it under my psued Cimorene [Colebaltblue] when I actually signed up on Yuletide as Colebaltblue. Does that make any sense?

Actually, will you look: does the story say it's for your full pseud+username, or just the pseud? Because if the latter, it may be part of the glitch where the DB isn't parsing pseud+username clearly in some cases, and is showing a gift for "Anne" to everyone who has "Anne" as either a username or pseud.

Hmmm, it's probably part of the glitch, because if you search for just "Cimorene" those two stories show up. If you search for just Colebaltblue my one story shows. If you use the "My Gifts" function on my page, you get all three.

I just wanted to make sure that Cimorene got hers...

Yeah, they're tagged "cimorene" because the Yuletide recipient has that as their username, but they show up for you because you have that as a pseud.

Should I think it's weird that in my dashboard some of the fics I wrote (there are nine) say they are by Anonymous [Flora (florahart)] and some of them say they are just by Anonymous? (with no flora-anything)

I mean, they're in my dashboard, so clearly it knows they are by me, so...wha? I am not actually fretful, just thinking that *if* that were an indication of something that was going to break at reveal time, you would likely want to know beforehand. Just checking, no rush, etc, etc.

It sounds like on the ones displaying as "Anonymous [Flora (florahart)," you put the full pseud+username as author, and on the others, you just put "Flora," and another unintended effect of the pseud+username glitch is that in some instances/contexts, only the pseuds are being hidden. If you go into edit on the stories themselves, you should be able to confirm that (although looking at the listings I can see, I'm completely wrong on that).

If they do all have the same content in the author field, you might file an AO3 Support request, give them that information, with story links!

Hm. I tried to be consistent on that by using the yuletide pseud in every case (but, hey, pinchiness sometimes makes for a little bit of sloppiness). I will look. As long as nothing breaks, I suppose it doesn't much matter, heh.
