YAY!

Q. - I put in placeholders for my letters in the AO3 system -- is there a way to go in and edit these there?

There isn't a way for you to edit it, but if you email yuletideadmin@gmail.com with a link to your assignment and the letter, we can contact your author for you (and add it to your assignment page in case of it becoming a pinch hit).

Thank you so much for all your hard work on this! I have kind of an odd question: for letters posted on Tumblr, on blogs with anonymous questions enabled, would it be unacceptable/in violation of the rules to ask one's recipient questions directly but anonymously? If so, I need to go tweak my letter. Thanks for answering!

It would be against the rules to ask directly even anon. This is because it has a greater risk of the recipient working out what they are getting (eg what fandom or even plot points) and we try to avoid this to ensure that everyone has a surprise.

In the past, mods have offered to take a question and write up similar questions for the other requests. Is that an option this year?

Yes, if you email us with the details of your question and the following information:
Your recipient's name
A link to your assignment on AO3 - see http://archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR-NAME-HERE/assignments and find the link to the Yuletide 2014 one

We'll make up questions and pass the answers along.

Tiny fists of yay! Ahem.

What are your thoughts on "Set a different publication date" ? Is there a step-by-step manual somewhere if you'd like to post in December but can't? (Cue inquiries about the I'll Be Away post).

Or is this not recommended in case of placeholders, or setting it to year 2114? And we should just post the finished story whenever it's finished, even if it torments our recipient for a month?

There are several points here: I don't think you can actually date a work in the future on AO3, and even if you did it would still show up as a gift for them. There are instructions on how to let someone else post your story for you in the faq: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2014/profile#proxypost
However, I'd suggest it is better to post the story when it is ready.

(there will be an I'll be Away post nearer the time in the main comm, I';m sure)

No matter when you post it, they won't get the email until the collection goes live. You'll be able to see and access it from your dashboard, and the mods will be able to see it in the collection, but nobody else will be able to see it. Well, if they go to the Yuletide collection on AO3 they'll see that a story was posted to the collection, but the date it was posted will be the only identifying info. No fandoms, titles, characters, other tags, or recipient will be attached to it--I don't even think the word count is listed.

When the archive goes live on December 25, your recipient will be sent a link to it, and all the details (except your name) will be publicly available. Author names will be revealed a week later.

I will note that it's generally better to post sooner rather than later; the more people trying to post at the last minute, the harder the load on the servers, which has occasionally caused problems in previous years, though I don't think recently.
