Old Archive Import To AO3!

Mar 26, 2014 18:48

As has been the long term plan, the old archive is going to be imported to AO3. Please see the announcement for more details of how the process is going to work. The import is scheduled for early May. We would like to thank Open Doors Committee and AO3 coders for all the work to make this possible ( Read more... )

This doesn't affect me, but I'm curious-- if you delete a story from an old Yuletide, but you've participated since the year you posted the story in question, why would that disqualify you from participating in the future? In other words, how is orphaning the story (which by my understanding would take your pseud off it and remove any way for it to be linked to you) different from removing the story from AO3 altogether?

Thanks for clarifying!

The difference is that the story is still there for the recipient (and everyone else) to read. The idea is that the story is a gift to the recipient and so it is not really fair to them to take it down as they would not then be able to go back and reread it.

Got it-- I wasn't even thinking about it that way, but it makes total sense. Thanks for the fast reply! :)

If we've already posted our stories manually on AO3 and want to avoid them getting duplicated, should we contact Open Doors prior to import or afterwards?

After the import has happened (see for details: http://transformativeworks.org/news/yuletide-coming#alreadyadded )

Thank you for asking that. I only have two NYR stories in the archive, but I've already posted them both at AO3.

What if we don't want them merged? (If we've already imported the stories, and corrected all the typos, which used to be so difficult to do.) If I understand merging correctly, it would re-introduce all the infelicities.

As I understand it (and you might want to check with OD directly), the merging will take the version you have already uploaded and keep that text, comments etc, but change the redirect so that anyone opening the link to the story on the old archive will be directed to the new version.

That would be awesome.

*Making a mental note to check with OD when the import happens.*

Thanks!

As far as I can tell there's no instance in which an imported version of Story A would be merged with a pre-existing upload of Story A. As I read the Open Doors announcement, you get an email inviting you to claim the imported version, and once you do that, it exists side-by-side with the (edited, in this case) version you uploaded directly -- until, that is, you tell Open Doors which version to keep and which to delete, as they ask in the case of duplicate works such as we're discussing here ( ... )

Why on earth are we allowing people to delete stories? I have always been under the impression that by agreeing to participate in Yuletide, you are agreeing to keep the story up on the archive in perpetuity -- regardless of where the archive ends up being located. Orphaning allows the writer to remove their involvement, but the recipient to know that their gift is still accessible. This seems to be completely counterintuitive to everything that an archive stands for, not to mention violating the concept of gift-giving.

Once the stories are imported to AO3 we have no way of stopping people deleting their stories, and so have to accept that it is a possibility. It comes along with allowing people to edit their own stories and everything. We would really prefer it if no one deleted their stories.
