Question from a newbie anonymous December 16 2010, 18:36:02 UTC
Can you edit your story at all after you submit it? Or is that the end? Thanks!

No, you can continue to edit, pretty much forever -- although it's good to try and finish editing as much as possible before the reveal! Mind you, there's always those one or two little glitches that you don't catch until months and months later...

That's what I was wondering and while I plan to have it all nice and beta'd before the posting deadline... We know how plans can go.

Who gets to decide what is "complete"? Like, what if the author feels it's a complete story, but it's just a slice-of-life kind of thing, a scene that doesn't necessarily have an "ending", and the reader is unfulfilled/doesn't think it's complete? What then?

Completeness isn't about style -- it could be a series of vignettes, a complete scene -- we're fine with things like that.

But we've had stories that broke off without resolution and were clearly unfinished, or stories that ended on cliffhangers with "to be continued" -- which then never were. It's fine to write (or plan to write) a sequel to your own story, but what you *do* post should stand on its own and not require the unposted part to make sense/be a complete story of whatever type it is.

So it's not about whether the recipient likes it or feels "fulfilled." We tend to use what we feel is a pretty common-sense approach, and simply want to prevent people posting whatever they have done as a "story" when they're clearly not finished.

And this only comes into play if a recipient reports an incomplete story, which they don't always do.

I haven't used it myself, but I believe it's pretty straightforward! I know that for the first part, when you go to post, there will be a section that asks if the story is in multiple chapters. This will open two new fields, one to add the number of chapters (if you know it - the default is a question mark), and one to put in your chapter's title. It should be fairly easy to follow from there -- and I bet someone who knows more will respond to you, as well. *g*

I have used the function a lot, and it works just as elyn says. Upload the first part and in the header/tag area check the box for multi-chapter work. Do what you normally do to add the tags/warnings/etc for the story as a whole. Once it's all uploaded and hunky dory, when you're looking at the document, you'll see in the top bar the option to "add chapter". Fill it in and keep going. :)
