Octavia Butler is part of my pantheon of writers. Reading her made me question so many things about SF that I read and find books after reading her than I ever did before. I'm sad that she's passed away. Thanks for talking about it.
For me too. She could introduce concepts in a way that maybe Delany was a little too dense or too academic to get across to as wide an audience. She opened so many doors for thinking about SF as a way of observing and yet I could always pass her books off to a relative or girlfriend without worrying they wouldn't be understood or worrying they were too deeply-in-genre to affect someone who wasn't a fan.
