I would not be surprised at all. One after another, they're stripping civil rights from their own citizens. It's like they've all gone crazy.

I just can't understand why they're doing this at all, why they're even thinking about it seriously. Isn't this the opposite of what the States is supposed to be? After all, they promote themselves as the opposite - so why are they fucking themselves over like this?

I haven't paid much attention to American politics for most of my life, but it seems to me that the magic phrase you're looking for is "homeland security." One of America's responses to 9/11 was screwing over their own people in the name of safety. And when you take one right from people, it's easier to take the next and the next and so on.
