Scrapbook, '14 edition

Jan 04, 2014 03:49

I liked the idea of making my own scrapbook with all the books, movies, TV series and so on that were part of my life last year, so I'll be doing the same this new year. My goal is to increase the numbers, specially when it comes to books and non-subbed things. As always, you can find the Asian films/doramas in MyDramaList.

I'm still deciding whether to add the fics I read or I wrote... I will probably add only the latter, but I'm not sure with the former. Also, this year's scrapbook includes some quotes I liked or were somehow poignant.

(in brackets, last year stats; something followed by a ♥ means that I specially enjoyed and/or I would recommend it, while ♡ means I enjoyed it but not as much - but good nonetheless! "(R)" is something I had already watched/read/etc. before, strikenthrough text is for TV series I'm currently watching)

[February]
  1. {spoiler}
If you have nothing to hide, there
shouldn't be any reason for you to worry.
    Everyone, stand up. (...)
I do not like to be worshipped, and
I don't like ranks dividing people.
I don't like it when I cannot see people's faces, either.
It bothers me to see people prostrate themselves before me
and to watch people do so to others. (...)
From today forth, I shall repeal the custom of prostration
with the exceptions of official ceremonies and diplomatic affairs.
People are only to bow from kneeling and standing positions. (...)
I cannot care less for those
who have to reinforce their status by making others bow down. (...)
When people show gratitude or respect, they can bow naturally.
It is only natural for one to treat someone with respect.
And whether one does that or not is
up to one's moral character, and nothing more. (...)
I want each citizen of Kei to become their own ruler. (...)
And I know how those who are looked down upon feel.
People aren't born to be slaves.
The strong mind that withstands insult and disaster
and is not afraid to correct wrongs will not subject itself to corruption.
I want the people of Kei to have such freedom.
I want each of them to become masters of themselves.
We must start by holding our heads high.
You asked me what I was doing to the kingdom...
And I hope this answers your question.
To demonstrate my intention, I hereby repeal the practice of prostration.
Let this declaration be my first ordinance!- The Twelve Kingdoms, ep. 39 (5th February)
  2. Victory isn't what's most important in a battle. Rather it's to defend yourself even if you lose. - The Prime Minister and I, ep. 6 (9th February)

  3. Fight with realistic
    hope, not to destroy
    all the world's wrong,
but to renew its good. - Elizabeth Wein @ Rose Under Fire (13th February)
  4. Being afraid doesn’t become a reason that you can use to run away. - The Prime Minister and I, ep. 13 (16th February)

[March-October]
  1. The best gift you could give to yourself is perspective and the ability to enjoy today without worrying about tomorrow. Take your anxieties on bit by bit, thus making everything more manageable, and realize that your future is not out to murder you. (...) Besides, the only way you can ensure having a good future is by living a good present. - Ryan O'Connell (7th March)
  2. A flower always has to go through an important period of growth under the dark soil before it emerges into an amazing beautiful creation. (x)
  3. (?)
  4. Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion. - Simon Sinek (27th June)
  5. How to Write Good - Unknown Author (added 3rd August, but probably from March or April)

  6. For several years, I had been bored. Not a whining, restless child's boredom (although I was not above that) but a dense, blanketing malaise. It seemed to me that there was nothing new to be discovered ever again. Our society was utterly, ruinously derivative (although the word derivative as a criticism is itself derivative). We were the first human beings who would never see anything for the first time. We stare at the wonders of the world, dull-eyed, underwhelmed. Mona Lisa, the Pyramids, the Empire State Building. Jungle animals on attack, ancient icebergs collapsing, volcanoes erupting. I can't recall a single amazing thing I have seen firsthand that I didn't immediately reference to a movie or TV show. A fucking commercial. You know the awful singsong of the blasé: Seeeen it. I've literally seen it all, and the worst thing, the thing that makes me want to blow my brains out, is: The secondhand experience is always better. The image is crisper, the view is keener, the camera angle and the soundtrack manipulate my emotions in a way reality can't anymore. I don't know that we are actually human at this point, those of us who are like most of us, who grew up with TV and movies and now the Internet. If we are betrayed, we know the words to say; when a loved one dies, we know the words to say. If we want to play the stud or the smart-ass or the fool, we know the words to say. We are all working from the same dog-eared script.
It's a very difficult era in which to be a person, just a real, actual person, instead of a collection of personality traits selected from an endless Automat of characters.
And if all of us are play-acting, there can be no such thing as a soul mate, because we don't have genuine souls.
It had gotten to the point where it seemed like nothing matters, because I'm not a real person and neither is anyone else.
I would have done anything to feel real again. - Gillian Flynn @ Gone Girl (8th October)
  7. It was not because of my lack of skill or bad luck. It was not because I was working alongside practicing. It was not because I came from a poor family. It was not because my father passed away. That would be too painful to accept. That’s why it had to be because I didn’t work hard enough. Even though I did work hard, I’m just going to believe that I didn’t. - Misaeng, ep. 1 (19th October)
  8. [Question, read by Mithra] Can you give us, who're having hard times in our lives, some advice?
[Tukutz] People who's going through hard times should overcome it by themselves. Advice can be helpful in some way but it cannot directly influence you overcome it so you should become more strong and fight to endure it.
[Tablo] The things and people who make you suffer, they will always be there to distress you. As they do, the wisest revenge is to be happy. Just know that. - Epik High (6th November)

    à tout ce qui gémit,
    à tout ce qui roule,
    à tout ce qui chante,
    à tout ce qui parle,
    demandez quelle heure il est;
    et le vent,
    la vague,
    l'étoile,
    l'oiseau,
    l'horloge,
vous répondront: "Il est l'heure de s'enivrer!
Pour n'être pas les esclaves martyrisés du Temps, enivrez-vous; enivrez-vous sans cesse!
De vin, de poésie ou de vertu, à votre guise." - Enivrez-vous, Charles Baudelaire (x, x) @ Misaeng ep. 13 (30th November)
  10. 我恋は千尋の海の捨小舟 ("Waga koi wa chihiro no umi no suteobune" aka "My love is like a small boat adrift on a thousand fathoms of ocean, beset by waves on every side.") - Manazuru, Naoya Shiga translated by Stephen W. Kohl (3rd December)
  11. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. - The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost @ Misaeng ep. 20 (21st December)
  12. Hope cannot be said to exist, nor can it be said not to exist. It is just like roads across the earth. For actually the earth had no roads to begin with, but when many men pass one way, a road is made. - Lu Xun @ Misaeng ep. 20 (21st December)
